The claim of a report published 7th July by the Equality & Human Rights Commission (EHRC) - to have demonstrated that there is 'no bias in allocation of social housing to immigrants' - has been shown to be baseless by independent academic analysis.

Citizenship proposals

Commenting on the Home Office consultation “Earning the right to stay: A new Points Based Test for Citizenship”, Migrationwatch's Chairman said "This is an important step forward. For the first time the government have explicitly recognised that immigration is the main component of population growth. Removing the virtually automatic link between a work permit and settlement will allow industry to bring in key skills without necessarily adding still further to our population. Perhaps they have noticed that three quarters of the public want immigration cut very sharply from the present 230,000 a year to less than 50,000."

The Points Based System: Dispelling the Myths

July 31, 2009
  • The Points Based System (PBS) is not designed to limit the number of people settling in the UK. Therefore it is completely unlike the Australian system.
  • According to Government figures, the PBS would have cut net immigration in 2007 by 8%, when a reduction of 75% is required to stop the UK’s population hitting 70 million in 2028.

Introduction 1. The Home Affairs Committee issued its report on the Points based system for work permits on Friday 31 July. This Briefing Paper sets out the background.

The PBS will not prevent the UK’s population hitting 70 million 2. The Government’s own calculation is that, if the PBS had been in operation last year, it would have reduced immigration by 20,000 or 8 % of net immigration of 237,000 in 2007 (the latest available year)...
