Network Rail to axe 1,800 jobs
By STEVE HAWKES, Business Editor
NETWORK RAIL is preparing to axe up to 1,800 jobs across the UK to slash costs.
The rail operator told workers today that more than 15 per cent of its maintenance staff would have to go.
One furious worker said: "We're being run on a shoestring as it is. I can't see how they can make any further cutbacks."
The move comes just a day after bosses outlined plans for a £34BILLION 'Rocket of the Rail' fast-speed link between London and Glasgow. [Pure fantasy stuff - See my “Network rail plays Chuff-chuffs and the Beeb falls for it hook, line and sinker” -cs]
A Network Rail spokesman said the cutbacks would take place between now and April 2011 and he insisted the operator would try to redeploy as many affected staff as possible.
He told The Sun: "We are looking at restructuring out maintenance function to make it more effective in the way we carry out our operations.
"We are just starting on consultations with our people and the union.
"We haven't identified any specific roles as yet."
