GM Crop Imports Should be Increased, say Ministers and Farmers

'More genetically-modified crops used to feed pigs, poultry and dairy cattle could be imported into Britain to meet the demand for animal feed. Ministers are pressing the European Commission to speed up approval of GM crop varieties or risk a collapse in the market for home-produced chicken, eggs, pork and milk. Farmers have warned that unless they can feed their pigs and poultry on GM soya and maize varieties being grown in North and South America — but which are currently unlicensed for use in Europe — they may be forced to leave the industry.'

UK Government Ramping up the Case for GM Crops

'The British people face wartime rations and a vegetarian diet in the event of a world food shortage, a new official assessment on the UK’s food security suggests today. Even though the nation is 73 per cent self-sufficient in food production, higher than during the 1950s, the food chain is at risk from global influences such as a worldwide increase in population, climate change bringing extreme weather patterns, higher oil prices and more crops being grown for bio-fuel instead of food.

Supplies in future may also be disrupted by animal disease outbreaks, disruption of power supplies, trade disputes and interruptions for shipping and at ports. The UK however has one of the highest cereal production capabilities in the world with seven tonnes grown per hectare, compared a world average of 3.3 tonnes per hectare.

Swine Flu: 'Tamiflu Harm Outweighs Benefits for Children'

'They called on the Department of Health to have an urgent rethink of its current policy in the swine flu pandemic. Their study found that Tamiflu caused vomiting in some children, which can lead to dehydration and complications. And the drug had little or no effect on asthma flare-ups, ear infections or the likelihood of a youngster needing antibiotics.'
