On Obama's Decision to Scrap the Nuclear Shield
What is one to make of the Obama administration's decision--reported here--to scrap plans for a missile shield in Europe?
If the move--a dramatic reversal of Bush administration policy--reflects a secret deal with Russia, which opposed the shield, with respect to ending Iran's nuclear program, that would be a good thing.
More likely, Obama's decision is simply another attempt at appeasement--this time, of resurgent Russia, which has thus far shown no signs of being willing to join in truly tough sanctions against Iran.Understanding Barak's View
Barak's comments appear to conflict with the Israeli position as articulated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Accent on appear. Iran is a strategic threat to israel because of its missile program, Israeli leaders agree, and a potential existential threat to Israel because of its nuclear program.
Israel's nuclear arsenal is assumed to be a deterrent to Iranian missile bombardment of Israeli cities. Israeli nuclear weapons could also be used to preemptively strike Iranian nuclear and missile sites.
The bottom line: Israel can't allow Iran, which has vowed to destroy the Jewish State, to become a nuclear power. But the Obama administration's appeasement of Islamist Iran--and Islamism in general--is pushing Israel into a war with Iran that could involve nuclear weapons.
