Unite Union: No Vauxhall Factory Closures

The Unite Union says it has reached a deal with the new owners of GM Europe that will secure the future of Vauxhall and its 5,500 workers.

In return for the guaranteed security of the Luton and Ellesmere Port plants, unions have agreed to a series of cost cutting measures - including a two-year pay freeze and voluntary redundancies.

Unite Union General Secretary Tony Woodley said, "This agreement removes the uncertainty surrounding our plants and our people's jobs.
"It gives both plants job security and a future through to 2013, providing a good basis for a long-term future beyond that."

Candian car parts firm Magna was last month confirmed as the preferred option by General Motors to take control of its European operations that include Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in the UK.
Siegfried Wolf, the boss of Magna, had suggested the firm could cut as many as 10,500 jobs across operations.

This raised fears that Vauxhall could bear the brunt of redundancies after the German government offered billions of pounds in guarantees to help secure jobs in Germany.

But Unite say it has secured an agreement from Magna executives confirming that Ellesmere Port will produce the next generation Astra, due in 2016, and that the Luton van plant will be maintained as a key site within Magna's UK portfolio
