Dear Editor:

United States Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice on October 22, 2009 urged Israel to restart negotiations immediately to create an independent Palestinian State.  She was also quoted as saying “Being serious about peace means understanding that tomorrow need not look like yesterday.”

“Yesterday” (1964) the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) and Fatah formalized the Palestinian mind-set with a charter and constitution which declared Israel is illegal and that armed struggle must be utilized to destroy the Zionist entity.

“Yesterday” the Palestinian National Council in 1974 in its “Phased Plan” reiterated that the “armed struggle” would use liberated territory to liberate all of Palestine.

“Yesterday” 1998, Hamas established the Hamas covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement which restated the same Palestinian declaration of armed resistance until complete liberation of Palestine.

“Today” September 18, 2009 Hezbollah Secretary General Nasrallah delivered an address in which he declared that “Historic Palestine from the sea to the river belongs to the people of Palestine.”  The Israel entity is illegitimate; it is impermissible for anyone to recognize Israel; Israel is an illegal presence and must be wiped out.

“Today” Hamas leaders have declared that they will not accept any agreement signed by Abbas and Israel.

The constant theme in these documents and utterances of leaders has been that Israel has usurped land in the Palestinian waqf and will never be permitted in our Palestinian land.

I would be delighted to be apprised of some facts which suggest a transformation in Arab thinking.  However, I must respectfully and sadly state that there is nothing on the horizon of “tomorrow” which would indicate that immediate Israeli-Palestinian negotiations for a Palestinian State will modify the unalterable Arab mind-set that Israel does not belong in the Arab waqf and armed resistance must be utilized until Palestine is liberated.

            Respectfully submitted,
