Good morning,

The European Commission is facing criticism once again for their draconian approach to competition policy and procedures  – read the Wall Street Journal’s editorial piece on the EC’s refusal to approve the Oracle-Sun merger.

On the eve of the EU’s commissioner hearings, the top business, legal and policy experts from Europe and the U.S. will convene in Brussels to discuss the need for change in the EC’s competition policy. The following high-profile events will address the key competition issues facing Europe and the U.S. today – particularly the level of fines and fair procedures in cartel enforcement. We will keep you updated on the results of these conferences:

o   Key speakers include Philip Lowe (DG Competition, European Commission) and Tony Reeves (Partner, Clifford Chance LLP).

o   Key speakers include Philippe de Buck (Director General, BUSINESSEUROPE) and Andreas Schwab (Member of the European Parliament, EPP-ED, DE).

o   Key speakers include Ewoud Sakkers (Head of Unit, Cartel Directorate, European Commission) and Anne Riley (Associate General Counsel Antitrust, Shell International Ltd.).
