I recently posted an article about the Chinese drilling for oil in Kenya.
My American petroleum geologist friend has worked all over Africa searching for oil, and he sent me this note which makes for interesting reading:-
Jan,
I felt compelled to respond to this story, as I spent years in Kenya doing oil and gas exploration for major international oil companies. They also drilled several wells onshore, with no success. Isiolo was never considered a prime location for oil as it is too near the Great Rift Valley, where subsurface temperatures get hot very rapidly. It was always believed that if there was any oil in this area it would have been "cooked," i.e., it would have ignited in the subsurface, burned up, and no hydrocarbons would be left. I would be greatly surprised if the Chinese find anything.
