Dr Jefferson and several of his colleagues believe that paid advisers of the pharmaceutical companies should be removed from their positions and not allowed to give recommendations to the WHO, but the organization itself is in no hurry to carry out such a reform. Just 1m of the 10m doses of the swine flu vaccine distributed to immunise the general public have so far been used, indicating slow progress in fighting the current pandemic. The low uptake appears to confirm opinion polls suggesting considerable scepticism about the benefits of vaccination, with the H1N1 flu virus less severe and an intense debate on the potential side-effects of vaccination. The figures may stoke debate on the amount paid by the government for measures to counter the pandemic, including total orders of 90m doses of vaccine. David Salisbury, director of immunisation at the Department of Health, said yesterday he remained "hopeful" that more than 11m people would be vaccinated "well before Christmas".

3. Social Workers Kidnap Baby Of Mother Falsely Accused Of MSBP/Factitious Disorder To Meet Adoption Targets
A couple have accused social services of "kidnapping" their nine week-old daughter for adoption. They allege that police and council staff forced their way into their home and took the baby away while they were physically restrained. They claim they were not allowed to cuddle the child or say goodbye. The couple from Suffolk, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, say their daughter was taken for adoption despite no allegation made against them ever having been proven. The mother said: "The council have been hellbent on taking our daughter away come what may. We feel we have been victims of a system which is completely biased in favour of social services."

Police officers found to have illegally disclosed information from confidential databases have been named in a dossier handed to ministers. The report, compiled by the information watchdog, shows how personal information from private and public bodies is being used to commit more serious crimes. Christopher Graham, the Information Commissioner, said the dossier formed the hard evidence that he hoped would force ministers to give courts the power to impose two-year prison sentences for the most serious misuse of protected information. Under the current law, those who breach the Data Protection Act can only be fined.
