AMMAN, Dec 7 (NNN-PETRA) — King Abdullah II has said a European role is vital to remove hurdles blocking efforts to settle the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution as the key to regional security and stability.

He told European Union (EU) ambassadors to Jordan in a meeting held over a working lunch on Sunday that concerted efforts were needed to kickstart serious negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis according to a clear timeline to address all final status issues towards the setting up of an independent and viable Palestinian state living in security and peace alongside Israel.

King Abdullah hailed the Swedish presidency of the EU for efforts to come up with a unified European stance recognising East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state under the internationally-backed two-state solution.

He warned that no peace and stability were attainable without Palestinian statehood.

The King urged European nations to exercise due pressure on Israel to stop unilateral actions in occupied Jerusalem aimed at changing the city’s landmarks, threatening Islamic and Christian holy sites and evicting the city’s Arab Muslim and Christian inhabitants.

During the meeting, attended by Royal Court Chief Nasser Lozi, the King’s adviser Ayman Safadi and Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, His Majesty briefed the envoys on national development and reform programmes Jordan had pursued to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development in various fields.

The King said he was keen on upgrading ties with EU member nations, voicing hope that ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, which came into force on Dec 1, would boost Europe’s role in the world and enhance its partnership with regional states.
