Lula and Correa leave Ibero-American summit: Brazil and Ecuador are among the majority of Latin American countries which do not want to recognize the elections staged by Honduras' de facto government after the ouster of president Manuel Zelaya in a June 28 coup. Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica and Panama are in favour of recognizing the elections which were won by conservative candidate Porfirio Lobo.

U.S. has bungled Honduran crisis: After condemning the June 28 coup, the U.S. has essentially allowed the de facto government to get away with it, causing a rift with strategic South American partners.

Caracas 'closes compromised banks': The Venezuelan government has closed down four banks, saying authorities uncovered major financial problems after they took over the banks due to irregularities in their operations.

Secretary-General seeks $7.1 billion to aid 48 million people in 2010: It comprises twelve consolidated appeals, for Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, the occupied Palestinian territory, Somalia, Sudan, Uganda, the West Africa region, Yemen, and Zimbabw
