The failure of Lagos and Amsterdam airport security to detect the explosives the Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab carried aboard two flights on Christmas Day was only a small side-effect of US intelligence policy-makers' flawed approach to al Qaeda. Security measures for US travel will be revised and enhanced, but until the agencies which fell down on the tasks of thwarting and combating terror are overhauled and change their approach, Americans will continue to be caught napping.

Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi's nephew, Ali Habib, was not shot dead during a Tehran demonstration Sunday, Dec. 27, as reported, but waylaid and gunned down as he left his home, DEBKAfilereports exclusively. Fresh riots followed the disappearance of the body Monday. The opposition fears this assassination augurs the physical liquidation of its leaders, more of whom were arrested.

Obama vows to "disrupt and defeat violent extremists" anywhere

In a special statement from Hawaii, the US president Barack Obama delivered an unusually hard-hitting address in which he vowed to "keep up the pressure on those who would attack and slaughter innocent women and children" - not just defensively, but by using "every element in our power to disrupt and defeat violent extremists."

He also condemned brutal repression in Iran.
