Commentary by Alice Schroeder Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- “I just wrote my first reference for a gun permit,” said a friend, who told me of swearing to the good character of a Goldman Sachs Group Inc. banker who applied to the local police for a permit to buy a pistol. The banker had told this friend of mine that senior Goldman people have loaded up on firearms and are now equipped to defend themselves if there is a populist uprising against the bank. I called Goldman Sachs spokesman Lucas van Praag to ask whether it’s true that Goldman partners feel they need handguns to protect themselves from the angry proletariat. He didn’t call me back. The New York Police Department has told me that “as a preliminary matter” it believes some of the bankers I inquired about do have pistol permits. The NYPD also said it will be a while before it can name names. While we wait, Goldman has wrapped itself in the flag of Warren Buffett, with whom it will jointly donate $500 million, part of an effort to burnish its image -- and gain new Goldman clients. Goldman Sachs Chief Executive Officer Lloyd Blankfein also reversed himself after having previously called Goldman’s greed “God’s work” and apologized earlier this month for having participated in things that were “clearly wrong.” Has it really come to this? Imagine what emotions must be billowing through the halls of Goldman Sachs to provoke the firm into an apology. Talk that Goldman bankers might have armed themselves in self-defense would sound ludicrous, were it not so apt a metaphor for the way that the most successful people on Wall Street have become a target for public rage. Pistol Ready Common sense tells you a handgun is probably not even all that useful. Suppose an intruder sneaks past the doorman or jumps the security fence at night. By the time you pull the pistol out of your wife’s jewelry safe, find the ammunition, and load your weapon, Fifi the Pomeranian has already been taken hostage and the gun won’t do you any good. As for carrying a loaded pistol when you venture outside, dream on. Concealed gun permits are almost impossible for ordinary citizens to obtain in New York or nearby states. In other words, a little humility and contrition are probably the better route. Until a couple of weeks ago, that was obvious to everyone but Goldman, a firm famous for both prescience and arrogance. In a display of both, Blankfein began to raise his personal- security threat level early in the financial crisis. He keeps a summer home near the Hamptons, where unrestricted public access would put him at risk if the angry mobs rose up and marched to the East End of Long Island. To the Barricades He tried to buy a house elsewhere without attracting attention as the financial crisis unfolded in 2007, a move that was foiled by the New York Post. Then, Blankfein got permission from the local authorities to install a security gate at his house two months before Bear Stearns Cos. collapsed. This is the kind of foresight that Goldman Sachs is justly famous for. Blankfein somehow anticipated the persecution complex his fellow bankers would soon suffer. Surely, though, this man who can afford to surround himself with a private army of security guards isn’t sleeping with the key to a gun safe under his pillow. The thought is just too bizarre to be true. So maybe other senior people at Goldman Sachs have gone out and bought guns, and they know something. But what? Henry Paulson, U.S. Treasury secretary during the bailout and a former Goldman Sachs CEO, let it slip during testimony to Congress last summer when he explained why it was so critical to bail out Goldman Sachs, and -- oh yes -- the other banks. People “were unhappy with the big discrepancies in wealth, but they at least believed in the system and in some form of market-driven capitalism. But if we had a complete meltdown, it could lead to people questioning the basis of the system.” Torn Curtain There you have it. The bailout was meant to keep the curtain drawn on the way the rich make money, not from the free market, but from the lack of one. Goldman Sachs blew its cover when the firm’s revenue from trading reached a record $27 billion in the first nine months of this year, and a public that was writhing in financial agony caught on that the profits earned on taxpayer capital were going to pay employee bonuses. This slip-up let the other bailed-out banks happily hand off public blame to Goldman, which is unpopular among its peers because it always seems to win at everyone’s expense. Plenty of Wall Streeters worry about the big discrepancies in wealth, and think the rise of a financial industry-led plutocracy is unjust. That doesn’t mean any of them plan to move into a double-wide mobile home as a show of solidarity with the little people, though. Cool Hand Lloyd No, talk of Goldman and guns plays right into the way Wall- Streeters like to think of themselves. Even those who were bailed out believe they are tough, macho Clint Eastwoods of the financial frontier, protecting the fistful of dollars in one hand with the Glock in the other. The last thing they want is to be so reasonably paid that the peasants have no interest in lynching them. And if the proles really do appear brandishing pitchforks at the doors of Park Avenue and the gates of Round Hill Road, you can be sure that the Goldman guys and their families will be holed up in their safe rooms with their firearms. If nothing else, that pistol permit might go part way toward explaining why they won’t be standing outside with the rest of the crowd, broke and humiliated, saying, “Damn, I was on the wrong side of a trade with Goldman again.” (Alice Schroeder, author of “The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life” and a former managing director at Morgan Stanley, is a Bloomberg News columnist. Posted by James Richardson November 30, 2009 http://www.redstate.com/jrichardson/2009/11/30/radical-islam-finds-voice-in-new-york-college/ There is a troubling story unfolding in Queens, New York, in which school officials and local Democrats have charged College Republicans with stoking racism and xenophobia. Siraj Wahhaj, a radical Muslim cleric who authorities in 1995 identified an unindicted co-conspirator in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, was last week invited to Queens College to speak on the subject “How Islam Perfected Thanksgiving.” Wahhaj testified in 1996 for convicted terror plotter Omar Abdel Rahman, who was charged with attempting to bomb New York’s Lincoln Tunnel and the United Nations. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg was recently assailed–justifiably so, considering the imam’s history and inflammatory rhetoric–in the press for inviting Wahhaj to an event with local Muslim religious leaders to discuss the Ft. Hood tragedy. Despite Wahhaj’s altogether sordid and troubling past, the imam was invited with open arms to campus of Queens College by the Muslim Student Association (MSA), whose members just days before attended a College Republican film screening event of an anti-radical Muslim film and reportedly laughed and muttered “good” as beheading footage of American businessmen and the collapse of the World Trade Centers aired. At a debate following the film, one MSA member said, “If I had enough money I would be part of the jihad army, I would kill all the Jews,” according to one College Republican present. Another spoke of getting a “bomb.” Following the events of the debate and the invitation to Wahhaj, the Queens College chapter of College Republicans demanded the school’s administrators defund the MSA on the grounds the group espoused radical, anti-American ideology. School officials defended the organization, telling reporters it was a matter of constitutionally-protected free speech. The MSA “definitely should not be funded by the taxpayers,” Queens College Republicans Vice President Ryan James Girdusky told the New York Post. But despite the school’s protestations, the Queens College Muslim Student Association has a history of associating with extremist elements of the Muslim community. One of the group’s most committed members, Adis Medunjanin, was last month arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with Najibullah Zazi in New York City as a prime suspect in a terror investigation called “one of the most serious terrorist threats to our country since Sept. 11, 2001” by Attorney General Eric Holder. Medunjanin, a respected member of the Queens College MSA, was a common fixture in the group’s prayer room, “where he came to worship two or three times a week,” according to the New York Times. But the most alarming aspect of this is the College Democrats’ conspicuous silence on the matter. Wahhaj’s record of destructive and divisive rhetoric is such that, in an ideal world, both parties would be compelled–out of simple respect for the victims of September, 11th, if by nothing else–to condemn the imam’s radical brand of Islam and the group who so willingly extended an invitation. Of course, we don’t live in an ideal world. College Democrats’ are complicit in Wahhaj’s troubling anti-American rhetoric by failing to condemn his presence and ideology, a particularly tone-deaf position as disconcerted New Yorkers cope with the Obama Administration’s reckless decision to award enemy military combatants civilian trails in their back yard. While school administrators’ insistence that the MSA is a run-of-the-mill student organization may be the politically expedient thing to do, it’s certainly not the right thing to do.Radical Islam Finds Voice In New York College

(IsraelNN.com) European Union foreign ministers are expected to officially call next week for the division of Jerusalem, according to a draft document obtained by Haaretz. A Tuesday report in the newspaper says the document implies that the EU would recognize a unilateral Palestinian Authority declaration of statehood.
The document - to be discussed at a two-day Brussels meeting on the peace process starting on December 7 - expresses the EU's concern over the deadlock in the peace process and calls for the immediate renewal of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in accordance with a prescribed timetable.
Reported: 12:02 PM - Dec/01/09 http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/Flash.aspx/175619
(IsraelNN.com) The Foreign Ministry warned Tuesday morning that a Swedish-led attempt to have the European Union recognize eastern Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian Authority will backfire.
The draft proposal, expected to be placed on the EU table next week, would damage efforts to reach peace with the PA and damage the EU’s standing as a trusted entity, ministry spokesman Yossi Levy said.

(IsraelNN.com) Defense Minister Ehud Barak has ordered the call-up of reserve units responsible for emergency control of PA-controlled cities – and wants to activate them against the Jewish towns in Judea and Samaria.
The information was given to Arutz-7 by Danny Dayan, Chairman of the Yesha Council of Jewish Communities in Judea and Samaria. “Netanyahu and Barak have crossed all red lines,” Dayan said, “and have now declared outright war on the Jewish settlement enterprise of Judea and Samaria.”
Tuesday morning, clashes broke out in several towns between Jewish residents in Yesha and inspectors sent to deliver the construction-freeze orders. The Yesha Council called on residents not to use violence but to block the inspectors’ entry into the communities to “enforce these immoral and anti-Zionist orders.”
PA Threatens to Encircle Jewish Towns
At the same time, while the Netanyahu government is drying up the towns, PA Arabs are planning to encircle them. A Fatah Central Committee member is quoted in the Al-Arab newspaper (Nov. 20) as saying, “Fatah has made a decision to ignite the third intifada in the West Bank in response to Israeli intransigence… This intifada will be worse than the previous ones, though it will retain its popular character without live weapons.”
The new intifada is planned to center around “encircling the settlements with thousands of Palestinians,” and that PA Chairman Abbas has given his okay.
Correspondent Haggai Huberman reports that top Fatah and PA officials have increased their threats to fight Israel with violence. Nabil Shaath, for instance, who led the PA negotiating team under Yasser Arafat, told a Tunisian newspaper two weeks ago, “We have tried talks for 18 years, but Israel continues its aggression, destruction and settlements. It’s our right to return to the way of armed struggle in order to restore our rights.”
Minister Barak arrived in the large army base outside Beit El on Tuesday to visit the units assigned to enforce the construction freeze. “The freeze in the settlements will be fully enforced,” Barak said, “and in a way that will guarantee as much dialogue as possible with the settlers… The Israel Defense Forces, and especially the Civil Administration, Israel Police and Border Guard, are readying themselves to ensure that the decision is enforced.”

DEBKAfile Exclusive Analysis December 1, 2009, 2:59 PM (GMT+02:00) Five British yachtsmen seized by Iran Tehran is thinking in terms of prosecuting the five British yachtsmen seized by Iranian Revolutionary Guards naval commandos on their way from Bahrain to Dubai last month. Tuesday, Dec. 1, Esfandiar Rahim-Mashaie, president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's chief of staff said: "The judiciary will decide about the five… but naturally Iran will take hard and serious measures if we find out they had evil intentions." DEBKAfile's Iranian and intelligence sources report that the Iranians plan to claim that instruments for tracking aircraft, missiles and electronic jamming devices were found aboard that the Kingdom of Bahrain racing yacht, detained near the island of Sirri. They will try and counter the British Foreign Office claim that the sailors were innocent civilians who strayed inadvertently into Iranian waters on their way to a racing meet. The British foreign office waited a week before disclosing the incident on Monday, Nov. 30 - apparently after fruitless negotiations for the release of the five sailors, Luke Porter, David Bloomer, who is an English broadcaster for Bahrain radio, Oliver Smith, Oliver Young and Sam Ushr. According to Tehran, even if the yacht strayed off course, the crew was experienced enough to reach the island of Abu Musa opposite Dubai and their craft should have been found between Abu Musa opposite Dubai and not between Abu Musa and Sirri where it was stopped. The incident plays into Tehran's hands at a particularly low moment in UK-Iran relations, occurring as it did when the Islamic Republic was in the middle of a large-scale air defense exercise and heading for a major crisis with world powers. Tehran may now try and force one or more of the detainees to confessing they were spying on Iranian's systems for defending its nuclear sites. DEBKAfile's military sources note that Tehran's is hypersensitive to any movements around the cluster of islands situated close to the Straits of Hormuz because Revolutionary Guards bases on Abu Musa,Sirri, Big Tunb and Little Tunb provide Iran with its first line of defenses against air and missile attack. The systems installed there are intended to intercept hostile aircraft and missiles before they penetrate mainland Iran or try to bomb targets in Iran from the outside, while still over the Persian Gulf. This network of defense installations and their integration into the aid defense systems protecting Iran's nuclear facilities were the focus of its air defense exercise last month. The islands dotted around Iran's Persian Gulf coast also house large naval and shore-to-sea missile bases. The Islamic regime can be expected to blow the British yachting case up into a major feature of the landscape of rising tension with the West. Tehran has a special reckoning with London, alleging the Brits took a hand in its violent post-election protests last June. Three American backpackers who strayed across the Iraq-Iran Kurdish border in July are still detained and face charges of spying. Wednesday, Iranian "students" have been called out to demonstrate outside the British embassy in Tehran Wednesday in protest against "the Britons' illegal entry" into Iranian waters. DEBKAfile Special Report November 30, 2009, 10:44 PM (GMT+02:00) Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Omar relocates As US president Barack Obama informed senior military chiefs in Afghanistan Monday, Nov. 30, they would receive another 30,000 US and 10,000 extra troops from eight NATO countries, Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar tried to get the jump on him by warning that the US and NATO faced defeat. Obama briefed UK, French, Russian and Italian leaders on his much-awaited new strategy for the Afghanistan conflict before unveiling it in a speech Tuesday. ![]()
