Obama links airliner attack to al Qaeda Yemen
US president Barack Obama finally brought himself to accuse al Qaeda in Yemen of the failed attempt to blow up a US airliner Saturday, Jan. 2, saying Yemen-based al Qaeda had armed and directed the Detroit bomber (not "suspect") Umar Abdulmutallab to attack US-bound airliner.
DEBKAfile's intelligence sources report: The plot was writ large five months ago when an al Qaeda assassin using explosives hidden in his underwear failed to murder the Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, chief the Saudi campaign in Yemen. US intelligence and its counter-terror agencies also failed to anticipate the Dec. 30 suicide bombing which killed 7 CIA agents and a US soldier at an Afghans base.
