MED UNION: NEW EUROMED REGIONAL ASSEMBLY TO START IN JANUARY
(ANSAmed) - BRUSSELS, DECEMBER 4 - Waiting for the appointment of the secretary-general of the Mediterranean Union (MU), the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) has been created. Representatives of regional and local bodies in the Euro-Mediterranean area have in fact decided to meet for the first time in Barcelona, on January 21. The announcement was made by the president of the EU Committee of the Regions, Luc Van Den Brande, after a preliminary meeting in Brussels with participation, among others, of the president of the Marches Region, Gian Mario Spacca. "To re-launch the Barcelona process, the European Union needs the support of all its partners" explained Van den Brande, "including the local and regional authorities". According to the president of the Committee of the Regions, ARLEM "will improve the public profile and the monitoring that form the basis of E projects of the EU and its partners in the southern and eastern part of the Mediterranean". ARLEM should therefore give a new impulse to the dialogue between the two shores of the Mediterranean Sea, both as instrument for local democracy in the region and as contribution to an exchange of good practices. The inauguration of the newly formed Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly will be hosted by the Catalonian government, in collaboration with the Spanish on-duty presidency of the European Union.
