Mousavi concedes to regime: Scientist was killed by Iran's enemies

In a gesture of reconciliation toward the regime, Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi conceded Sunday, Jan. 17, that the Iranian scientist Mehsoud Ali-Mohammadi murdered outside his home last Monday was the victim of Iran's "enemies," namely the US and Israel.

The opposition had previously blamed his death on the "tyrannical regime's" campaign to wipe out the intellectual elite backing the reform movement.

The Egyptian media rarely have a good word to say about Israel or Israelis, but Saturday, Jan. 16, the semi-official Al Ahram, glowingly profiled the director of the Mossad external intelligence agency, Meir Dagan, in epic terms as a hero who singlehandedly delayed Iran's advance on a nuclear weapon by "several years," scaled down "Syria's military capabilities" and may have been behind last week's assassination of an Iranian nuclear scientist.

IDF field hospital at full stretch in Haiti

Within eight hours of its arrival Friday, Jan. 15, the Israeli team running the largest field hospital in Haiti had treated scores of patients. It was the only medical facility on the quake-stricken island with a functioning operating theater which carried out three procedures on its first day. Another planeload of supplies and equipment will be sent out to restock the facility. Working flat out they are treating 500 patients a day. A small Zaka team, which flew in from Mexico Friday, rescued eight survivors from the rubble of Haiti University.

There was no word by Friday, Jan. 15, that Syrian president Bashar Assad, who arrived seven hours late for his appointment with King Abdullah in Riyadh Wednesday, Jan. 13, had left for home. He was invited by the Saudi King to meet Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak for a fence-mending summit. But Mubarak did not turn up.

Abdullah's hope for a joint effort by the three Arab rulers to force rival Palestinian leaders to bury the hatchet and form a unity government collapsed like a house of cards.
