Islam4UK, which calls itself a ‘platform’ for the fanatical Al-Muhajiroun movement, said its supporters will parade through Wootton Bassett in the near future. By SIMON MCGEE British taxpayers are helping to fund basket-weaving and slapstick acting workshops for young people across Europe. The projects, which include meetings about folk dancing and even a scheme to promote afternoon siestas, are part of an £800million EU programme to help people aged 13-30 'feel European'. Because the UK Government provides ten per cent of the EU's central budget, it is likely around £80million of the cash used to run the Youth In Action programme could have come from British taxpayers, even though only a handful of projects have benefited teenagers in this country. Dubious: EU courses are teaching slapstick inspired by films like Charlie Chaplin's City Lights One Serbian project that received £21,000 involved using silent-movie slapstick to promote 'non-verbal communication'. Another venture in Finland received thousands to support a coffee house which offered 'everyone the chance to have a sleep for free'. It aimed to encourage afternoon naps to reduce stress. 'Youth exchange participants' also flocked to Macedonia last year for a meeting entitled Stories And Legends, receiving £18,000 to explore storytelling. Campaign group the TaxPayers' Alliance yesterday attacked the programme. A spokesman said: 'UK taxpayers have a right to know if money is being spent wisely or wasted on frivolity. 'Given the bizarre projects, it's clearly the latter. But it's worse than just a case of money being squandered. It also shows the lengths to which the EU is seeking to supplant young people's own national identities with a meaningless European identity.' The seven-year programme, which runs until December 2013, has been developed by the European Commission. Arts and cultural groups can apply for funding after pitching ideas to the organisation responsible for administering the cash in their home country. In the UK that is the British Council. European Commission officials insist Youth In Action helps young people 'play an active role in the societies in which they live'. But EU documents confirm that the promotion of European - not national - citizenship is the programme's 'permanent priority'. The programme guide reads: 'To feel European, young people must become aware of the fact that they play a role in the construction of the current and future Europe. Therefore, a project with a European dimension should not only "discover" Europe, but also - and most importantly - aim to build it.' The British Council said it made sure money went to projects that directly help British young people. A spokesman said: 'Projects such as volunteering with homeless charities in Europe give thousands of 13-30-year-olds opportunities they would not otherwise get.' An EC spokesman said the projects were about exposing young people to other cultures and increasing their participation in society.
