I was expecting some answer that told me you can have severe winters within a pattern of global warming, with reference to some climate change model analysis which allowed for adverse variations within the assumed pattern of warming. How wrong I was. Instead Mr M threw his toys out of the pram, declined to offer a civil answer to a civil question, and told me the science of global warming was settled. Ah yes, that settled science. Here’s another example of how settled it is. David Cameron has dug himself into a hole over his marriage policy. As is widely perceived, his often-proclaimed commitment to support and promote marriage is at the very heart of his agenda to ‘mend the broken society’. It is also the one point of principle to which he has consistently stuck, trotted out whenever people accuse him of being merely a political opportunist. Look! say his supporters. He’s promoting marriage in the teeth of fashionable opinion! How brave is that!! You see, he is a man of principle after all!
