The flu jab does not provide the expected health
benefits to the elderly, new research shows
The annual £115million cost of giving flu jabs to the elderly in Britian alone may be a complete waste of money, a major review said yesterday. The injections fail to prevent deaths or provide the expected health benefits, according to researchers whose findings are published today in The Cochrane Library. The flu jab's co-inventor, biochemist Graeme Laver said in 2007 that the jab did not guarantee protection. Dr Laver, who died in 2008, commented: "I have never been very impressed with its efficacy."

Dr Meryl Nass, MD
Whilst Britain is drowning in Swine Flu vaccines, Poland has none and explains why. Fergus Walsh, BBC Medical Correspondent: "There is an awful lot of vaccine - tens of millions of doses - going spare. One option being discussed with GSK would involve keeping a stockpile of adjuvant, the booster chemical which is produced separately from the vaccine and mixed later." Piotr Olechno, Poland's Health Minister said: "The government had decided not to buy the vaccines because it could not guarantee there were no side effects and it did not want to take responsibility for those. We cannot agree with the pharmaceutical companies not taking responsibility for the potential side effects. This contravenes Polish law."

Dr Bonaventura Clotet, internationally
renowned retrovirologist and HIV expert
The "IrsiCaixa"- Foundation together with a special unit of clinical retrovirology at the "University Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol" in Badalona (Can Ruti), will soon start a privately financed pilot study for the identification of retroviral markers for detection of the retrovirus XMRV. The study will be led by the internationally renowned retrovirologist and HIV expert, Dr Bonaventura Clotet. Dr Clotet disposes of a highly qualified research team which ensures the viability and rigorous analysis of the relationship of XMRV with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS). The costs for the study amounts to 33,200 Euros. We yet need to raise 15,000 Euros. The rest has already been covered by donations. If the team lead by Dr Clotet is able to demonstrate the presence of XMRV in ME/CFS patients from a public hospital, the Health Authorities will, given the evidence, initiate more fundamental studies with public funding, which is so urgently needed. Please help this research that is so desperately needed for patients. Thank you.
