Fiscal tightening is in the air. First came the letter wars (in which I contributed to the opening salvo by signing the letter to TheSunday Times supporting a tougher fiscal stance). Then last week George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, delivered the Mais Lecture, which sketched out what an incoming Conservative government would do to cut the deficit. Meanwhile, a City research note argued that if he got the chance to do this then it could prompt a collapse of confidence.
