Dear Editor:
The dangerous theory now being promulgated by some middle ease pundits is that failure to solve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is a major factor in regional instability. Therefore, Israelis and the Palestinians must start peace negotiations immediately.
If there were no Israel, there would not be one sliver of difference in the following partial list of regional problems:
Taliban, Al Qaeda, and other Muslim extremists who want a Muslin caliphate covering the whole world, Iran & the bomb, Hamas-Fatah feud, Turkey Greece hiatus in Cyprus, Kurdish-Turkish hostility, Kurdish-Shia & Sunni difficulties, Muslim-Serbian dilemma, etc.
If there were no Israel, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict would be microscopic compared to the problems between Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, and the Palestinians pertaining to who takes and keeps which segments of the area.
Predicated upon the facts which followed the Oslo and Wye Peace Accords, a new peace process would produce more Israeli divestiture of land, and more violent terrorism. This method of peace accords reduces Israel’s control of strategic land in exchange for an elusive peace and a greater volume of terrorism. Eventually Israel would become too vulnerable to protect itself.
The only possibility of any semblance of peace in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is to force a change in the perpetual mind-set of the Palestinian leadership which continues its policy that the establishment of Israel is illegal and void and that armed resistance must be utilized until Israel is destroyed.
Respectfully submitted,
William K. Langfan
