    Saudi Columnists: Saudi School Curricula Must Be Reformed, Modernized

    The Saudi Education Ministry recently announced that, starting next school year, it would gradually introduce new curricula in the country's elementary and middle schools for both boys and girls. According to reports, the new curricula will be modern in their outlook and will raise the level of education, providing pupils with necessary academic and social skills and encouraging thought and creativity.

    In response to reports on the introduction of new curricula, Saudi columnists argued that while the proposed curricula are a step in the right direction, more comprehensive reform in the educational system is needed. One columnist took the opportunity to criticize the discrimination against women that still pervades the country's schoolbooks.

    The deputy of the American consul in Jerusalem recently met in Ramallah with Hamas member 'Omar 'Abd Al-Razzaq, formerly the PA minister of finance.

    Al-Siyassa: Lebanese Figures Working to Settle Palestinian Refugees in Brazil, Venezuela

    The Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa reports that, since December 2009, influential Lebanese figures have been maintaining contacts with the presidents of Brazil and Venezuela with the aim of settling some 250,000 Palestinian refugees, currently living in Lebanon, in these countries.

    Saudi Woman Arrested for Planning to Burn Her Veil

    On April 24, the Saudi authorities arrested a woman for announcing on a liberal Internet forum that she planned to burn her veil in the street in downtown Riyadh. According to the report, the authorities also destroyed the woman's house. 

    Abu Al-Gheit: If Israel Attacks Syria or Lebanon, Egypt Will Support Them

    During his visit to Lebanon on April 24, 2010, Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al-Gheit alluded to Israel's allegations that Syria has supplied Hizbullah with Skud missiles, calling them "a big lie."

    The commander of the IRGC air force said that the recent IRGC maneuvers in the Gulf involved bomb-carrying stealth UAVs that will soon be put into service, new systems for locating the enemy, and advanced naval missiles.

    'Al-Hayat': Russia Supplied Syria With S-300 Missiles

    The London daily Al-Hayat reports, citing a Russian source, that Russian President Vladimir Medvedev is to visit Syria on May 11 to discuss promoting Syria-Russia military and other cooperation.

    Lebanese Official: Hizbullah Has Weapons More Advanced Than Scuds

    Former Lebanese minister Wiam Wahhab said in Syria that Hizbullah had completed building its arsenal two years ago, and that today it needs no weapons from Syria or from any other country.  He said that Hizbullah has weapons that are more modern and better than the "old" Scud missiles, and that it would not hesitate to attack anywhere in Israel if Israel attacked Lebanon or Syria.

    Recent Scenario on Possible Division of Power in Iraq

    Iraqi politicians and commentators are discussing a possible scenario, reportedly sponsored by the U.S., under which Ayad Allawi becomes prime minister of Iraq and Nouri Al-Maliki president, along with the assigning of the powerful Ministry of Defense to his Da'wa party, and electing a Kurd as a speaker of parliament.
