Jihadi Article Threatens Al-Qaeda Attacks at 2010 World Cup

An article authored by the pseudonymous jihadi author "'Ubada Bin Al-Samit" threatens that Al-Qaeda will attack the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. The article was published in the 5th issue of the jihadist online magazine Al-Mushtaqun ila al-Janna ("Yearners for Paradise"), which was posted on jihadist forums on April 7, 2010. This magazine is a relative newcomer to the jihadi media scene; its inaugural issue was released in October 2009.

The author may or may not be the same 'Ubada Bin Al-Samit who is an active member of the Al-Falluja jihadist forum, but neither he nor the magazine are "official" spokesmen for Al-Qaeda or any other organization. The author himself notes this at the end of the article in a taunt "to the CIA," consciously playing on the reader's uncertainty as to whether this threat is to be taken seriously.

Palestinian Al-Tawhid W'al-Jihad Criticizes Hamas for Moscow Bombing Condemnation

Recent events in Russia and the Caucasus have been spilling over into the domestic rivalry among Islamist movements in the Palestinian territories. In particular, Hamas' courtship of Moscow is frequently invoked by the Salafi-jihadi organizations as proof that Hamas has betrayed pan-Islamic solidarity in favor of parochial interests. Thus, Palestinian Salafi-jihadi organizations were quick to issue eulogies for the Caucasus Emirate's Chief Qadi Anzor Astemirov, who was killed on March 24, 2010, whereas Khaled Mash'al, head of Hamas' political bureau, reportedly condemned the March 29 bombings that the Emirate carried out in Moscow.

In the latest installment of this polemic, the Gaza-based Jama'at Al-Tawhid Wa'l-Jihad (JTJ) has issued a communiqué lambasting Hamas for its position on the jihad in the Caucasus, and in particular for Mash'al's reported condemnation of the Moscow bombings.
