A GOVERNMENT department that exhorts Britons on its website to “find a home for things you no longer want” has been secretly caught on camera dumping the entire contents of a Whitehall office on to the street.
Chairs, desks and tables were thrown into a massive skip in an early-hours operation filmed by a resident whose flat overlooks the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
The Conservatives last night accused the gaffe-prone department of double standards. Bob Neil, Shadow Minister for Local Government, said: “There is one rule for Labour ministers and another for anyone else. This is an astonishing waste of taxpayers’ money. Furniture could have been reused or recycled.”
A Defra official could not comment on the clear-out, but it emerged last year that the department had spent £1.1million on furniture removal contracts in just three years, or £7,000 a week.
