British Taxpayers Ordered to Bail Out Euro

'All 27 EU finance ministers have been summoned to Brussels on Sunday to sign up to a “European stabilisation mechanism. Britain will be unable to veto this as it will be put through under the “qualified majority voting” system.

The deal, effectively to shore up the euro, was denounced as a “stitch-up” last night after it emerged Nicolas Sarkozy, the French President and Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor, had devised it behind closed doors and were attempting to push it through at a time when there is no clear government in Britain.'

Facebook’s Gone Rogue; It’s Time for an Open Alternative

'Facebook has gone rogue, drunk on founder Mark Zuckerberg’s dreams of world domination. It’s time the rest of the web ecosystem recognizes this and works to replace it with something open and distributed.

Facebook used to be a place to share photos and thoughts with friends and family and maybe play a few stupid games that let you pretend you were a mafia don or a homesteader. It became a very useful way to connect with your friends, long-lost friends and family members. Even if you didn’t really want to keep up with them.

Soon everybody — including your uncle Louie and that guy you hated from your last job — had a profile. And Facebook realized it owned the network.'

“We will defend the euro, whatever it takes,” European Commission President Jose Barroso told reporters early today after the leaders met in Brussels.'

BP Dome Fails to Stop Oil Leak

'British Petroleum (BP) has failed in its first attempt to contain oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico with a metal box as crystallized gas fills the structure. Engineers from the UK oil giant tried to lower a four-story containment dome on a ruptured oil well in a move seen as the best short-term way to stem the flow from the fissure. But they had to pull up the 98-ton contraption on Saturday as gas hydrates, essentially slushy methane gas, blocked the oil from being siphoned out the top of the box.'
