Election 2010

With a few final results still to come in, the UK is facing up to the reality of a hung parliament. No doubt, there will be significant negotiations and developments over the coming days and we look forward to bringing you further analysis as the political situation clarifies.

For now, however, our plea to you is simple: please continue to pray and to act.

It has been very encouraging to see local churches and Christians engage with the election process, perhaps as never before in recent times, not least through initiatives

such as Christians and Candidates and the Westminster 2010 declaration. However, this is just the beginning!

  • Please pray for those elected to parliament asking that they may be good governors. Please give thanks for the Christian MPs amongst them and ask that they may stand firm in the truth of the gospel from the outset.
  • Please try to meet with your newly elected MP – it would be wonderful if individual Christians and local churches could meet (or at the very least contact) their new representatives over the next few weeks, talking graciously with them about their hopes for the next parliament and about how we can pray for them.
  • Since another election within twelve months looks a possibility, please think about how we can prepare for it and make the most of the opportunity to speak clearly of the bible’s positive vision of society, centred on Jesus Christ – especially given the frustration and disillusionment that so many seem to be feeling at the present situation. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be suggesting ways that we can do this – but please begin to think and pray and let us know of your ideas.
  • Most of all, please pray that the LORD would have mercy on our nation, turning hearts to Him and raising up godly leaders. Please pray for courage, clarity and compassion for the church in this country that she might faithfully speak up and live out her calling as the bride prepared for Christ, presenting Him to a nation so in need of Him. Please pray for wisdom and imagination as to how best to do that embracing where necessary new ways to make Jesus, the unchanging one, known.
