Inquiry & Analyses No. 609—Iran

The Iranian Regime's Efforts to Enforce the Wearing of the Hijab

By: A. Savyon*

Introduction

Recently, the Iranian regime has expressed its concern over the rising trend among Iranian women of appearing in public without a hijab or with their hijab worn carelessly. Senior officials and regime propagandists have said that such immodest dress is to blame for moral decay and corruption, disease, and even earthquakes, claiming it threatens the regime's very existence. It was reported that Supreme Leader 'Ali Khamenei himself issued an order to address the problem. Soon afterwards, Interior Minister Mustafa Mohammad Najjar announced the launching of the "Modesty and Hijab Campaign," to be implemented by Iran's various government ministries. Maryam Mojtahed-Zadeh, who heads the Center for Women and Family Affairs in the President's Office, said that enforcement of the new campaign might call for the use of force and the renewal of the so-called "information patrols."

Special Dispatch No. 2947—Urdu-Pashtu Media Project

Following Times Square Attack, Pakistani Commentators Analyze Islamic Radicalism in Pakistani Society: 'Pakistan is Experiencing Youth Bulge'; 'More than Half of Pakistan's Population is Under the Age of 30'; 'Islamic Orthodoxy and Militancy Have Seeped Deep into Pakistan's State System'; 'Even the Mighty Army... [is] Brainwashed By the Joys of Jihad'

The arrest of Faisal Shahzad, a Pakistani-born naturalized U.S. citizen, in connection with the May 1, 2010 failed Times Square bombing has once again shed light on the Islamization of Pakistani society over the past three decades and its impact on the radicalization of Pakistani youth.

Commenting on the transformation of the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region into a sanctuary for terrorists, Malik Naveed Khan, who heads the police force in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (formerly North West Frontier Province), recently said: "Jihadi elements are coming here from all over the world because they can cross the border and can enter Afghanistan... The mountains along the Afghan border are the best shelter for them."

However, it is the socialization of Pakistani youth into the ideas of jihad and militancy over the past few decades that has become a worrying issue for Pakistani commentators, with no quick end in sight to overcome extremist teachings and role of religious and militant organizations.

Three renowned Pakistani commentators have traced the origins of the radicalization of Pakistani youth.  In an article titled "Youth and Militancy," renowned political analyst Dr. Hasan-Askari Rizvi observes that this radicalization of youth emanates from the Islamic orthodoxy that has become rooted in the Pakistani state system. Pervez Hoodbhoy, a prominent commentator on Pakistani culture and state who teaches nuclear physics at Islamabad's Quaid-e-Azam University, recently wrote an article titled "Faisal Shahzad's Anti-Americanism," analyzing the anti-Americanism that is sweeping Pakistani society. In another article, titled "Paths of Terrorism Lead But To Pakistan," renowned Pakistani columnist and philanthropist Ardeshir Cowasjee called for introspection in Pakistani society as to why so many youth are radicalized, noting that terrorism in Pakistan can no longer be attributed to ignorance and poverty.

President of the UN General Assembly Abdussalam Treki: Gaza Siege is Worse than the Nazi Camps

Dr. Ali Abdussalam Treki, a Libyan national, has been president of the United Nations General Assembly since June 2009. He has served three times as Libya's representative to the United Nations, and since 2004 has been the Libyan Minister of African Union Affairs. Dr. Treki has previously held high level postings and ambassadorships for the Libyan government.

On September 18, 2009, at the beginning of his term as General Assembly president, Dr. Treki made controversial comments about a resolution calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality, saying, "That matter is very sensitive, very touchy. As a Muslim, I am not in favor of it… I think it's not really acceptable by our religion, our tradition. It is not acceptable in the majority of the world. And there are some countries that allow that, thinking it is a kind of democracy … I think it is not."

The following are excerpts from an interview with Dr. Treki, which aired on Syrian TV on April 11, 2010.

Notes on Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen's Religious Curriculum and the Dissemination of Salafi Jihadi Doctrine in Somalia

On May 4, 2010, the Somali Al-Qaeda-allied jihad organization Al-Shabab Al-Mujahideen posted a communiqué about a graduation ceremony held at one of its educational institutions in Mogadishu. The ceremony, held on April 30 in the Nasr Al-Din Mosque in the city, was for 209 preachers who had completed a four and a half-month course of study called the 'Abdallah 'Azzam camp, named after the legendary leader of the Afghan Arabs; according to the communiqué, this course followed on previous ones (about which we do not have information). In attendance were movement spokesman 'Ali Mohamud Rage and 'Ali Jabal, Al-Shabab's governor for the province that includes Mogadishu, as well as other notables.
