New York and Washington, May 5, 2010 -- International human rights and women’s rights leaders, attorneys, scholars, columnists, Iranian human rights activists, media figures, women in the arts, and other prominent women have joined a nationwide campaign to urge Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to denounce the recent election of Iran to the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.
In an Open Letter to Secretary Clinton released today (text below) the leaders expressed their profound concern that Iran was “elected by acclamation” to the women's rights seat. Election by acclamation may occur when no United Nations member state requests an open vote. The signatories, citing reports by the U.S. State Department and international human rights organizations of the Iranian regime's record of barbaric human rights violations, are seeking answers from Secretary Clinton regarding the failure of the U.S. either to request or require an open vote on Iran’s election to the Commission.
The full text and a partial list of signatories to the letter follows, and more signatories’ names will be released this week.
AN OPEN LETTER TO SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON: DENOUNCE ELECTION OF IRAN TO U.N. WOMEN’S RIGHTSCOMMISSION

Dear Secretary Clinton:
We write as women leaders from across America and from organizations concerned with women’s human rights representing oppressed women and minorities.
We call on you, Secretary Clinton, to denounce Iran’s election to a four-year seat on the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women as an appointment that shocks the conscience of civilized societies.
We also wish to express our utter astonishment that Iran was “elected by acclamation,” which means that none of the United Nations’ member states – including the United States of America – requested or required an open vote on Iran’s election to the Commission. Why did the United States fail to request an open vote?
In 1995, to an audience of the Fourth World Conference on Women, you declared: "It is time for us to say here in Beijing, and the world to hear, that it is no longer acceptable to discuss women's rights as separate from human rights." You added: "If there is one message that echoes forth from this conference, let it be that human rights are women's rights and women's rights are human rights, once and for all.”

Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney of New York said she "believed that you spoke from personal conviction.”
Therefore, we are puzzled and deeply troubled that, as Secretary, you have remained silent regarding human rights abuses under the brutal Islamic Republic of Iran regime.
The government of Iran is the perpetrator of well-known, well-documented and shocking human rights abuses against women. There are sickening and horrific videos, websites, documented reports of gang rapes, stonings, mutilations, hangings, beatings, burnings and other barbaric acts of violence, intimidation, and humiliation against the women of Iran. Political dissidents, gays, non-Muslim minorities, apostates, and infidels are also targeted in widespread human rights violations and gruesome attacks -- all these atrocities are egregious violations of the U.N. Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Two hundred and fourteen Iranian activists recently wrote to U.N. member states to oppose Iran’s election to the U.N.'s Commission on the Status of Women. Their letter states: "Iran's discriminatory laws demonstrate that the Islamic Republic does not believe in gender equality…Women lack the ability to choose their husbands, have no independent right to education after marriage, no right to divorce, no right to child custody, have no protection from violent treatment in public spaces, are restricted by quotas for women's admission at universities, and are arrested, beaten, and imprisoned for peacefully seeking change of such laws."

The U.S. Department of State’s 2009 report on Iran’s human rights clearly states the egregious violations of Iran in this area:
The government's poor human rights record degenerated during the year [2009], particularly after the disputed June presidential elections. The government severely limited citizens' right to peacefully change their government through free and fair elections. The government executed numerous persons for criminal convictions as juveniles and after unfair trials. Security forces were implicated in custodial deaths and the killings of election protesters and committed other acts of politically motivated violence, including torture, beatings, and rape. The government administered severe officially sanctioned punishments, including death by stoning, amputation, and flogging. Vigilante groups with ties to the government committed acts of violence. Prison conditions remained poor. Security forces arbitrarily arrested and detained individuals, often holding them incommunicado. Authorities held political prisoners and intensified a crackdown against women's rights reformers, ethnic minority rights activists, student activists, and religious minorities. There was a lack of judicial independence and of fair public trials. The government severely restricted the right to privacy and civil liberties, including freedoms of speech and the press, assembly, association, and movement; it placed severe restrictions on freedom of religion. Official corruption and a lack of government transparency persisted. Violence and legal and societal discrimination against women, ethnic and religious minorities, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons; trafficking in persons; and incitement to anti-Semitism remained problems. The government severely restricted workers' rights, including the right to organize and bargain collectively, and arrested numerous union organizers. Child labor remained a serious problem. On November 20, for the seventh consecutive year, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution on Iran expressing concern about the country's "serious, ongoing, and recurring human rights violations." The Commission’s mandate is to review and report on women’s human rights and monitor progress toward improving women’s human rights. Clearly, the election of Iran to such a Commission is an appalling example of hypocrisy. We await your public and clear condemnation of this outrageously sexist and insensitive decision by the U.N.

- •The Pathfinder’s Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) had been removed from the dashboard; but Police retrieved it from the engine block
- •The VIN enabled investigators to find the registered owner of the vehicle in Connecticut where it was sold to Shahzadfor $1,300 in cash.
- •Shahzadbecame a U.S. citizen on April 17, 2009 and due to his change in status, authorities had a recent picture and were able to show it to the vehicle’s seller who identified the suspect
- •Also, an email address Shahzadhad given the seller was used to trace him and a cell phone number was traced back to him.
The Suspect
- •Shahzadis a 30 year old naturalized American citizen of Pakistani origin; he is said to have been a resident of Karachi
- •He is married and has two young children, a boy and a girl, with whom he shared a home in Shelton, Connecticut, near Bridgeport , at 119 Long Hill Avenue, until May 2009, when he moved out.
- •Shazad’soccupation is not yet known; a neighbor speculated he worked on Wall Street
- •Shahzadhas traveled to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, most recently in June 2009 and returned to the U.S. in early February
- •A Pakistan Interior Ministry official said Shahzadhad been in Pakistan in April 2009 and departed on August 5th; there is conflicting information about the exact time of the visit with other reports placing him there in July-August 2009
- •Shahzadallegedly stayed in the port city of Karachi during that period while other reports said he traveled to Peshawar, close to the border with Afghanistan

Growing trend to meet with Muslims rings alarm bells for some
The effort among some Christian churches to meet with Muslims and dialogue about faith is a betrayal of the basic foundations of Christianity, asserts a critic of the developing trend.
"Useful idiots," is how Christian talk show host and Muslim analyst Ingrid Schlueter assessed the participants in a recent interfaith dialogue session between the Acts 29 Network-affiliated Harambee Church and MAPS, the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, a group that has connections to the Washington state chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR.

Geller said any CAIR involvement should be of concern for a Christian.
"CAIR is a Hamas front, an unindicted co-conspirator in a Hamas funding case. Hamas is a jihad terrorist group. Several former CAIR officials are now in prison for terrorist activities. The FBI won't work with CAIR anymore, and is in fact investigating CAIR," Geller explained.
Geller also makes the tie between CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood.
"The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt has called CAIR the Muslim Brotherhood in the U.S. CAIR's ties with the Muslim Brotherhood were, in fact, entered in evidence in the Holy Land terror trial. The Muslim Brotherhood's stated goal is one world living under Islamic law," Geller said.
"The Quran teaches that Christians are under Allah's curse for teaching that Jesus is the Son of God. The Muslim call to prayer calls Muhammad a messenger of Allah, and Muhammad taught that Christianity was just a twisted version of Islam. So what were the leaders of Harambee church thinking? What do the leaders of the Harambee church think of the worldwide persecution, oppression and subjugation of Christians living in Muslim lands?" Geller asked.
"By working with Hamas-tied CAIR, and letting the Muslim call to prayer sound in their church, they're showing their weakness and ignorance of the Islamic jihad program to conquer and subjugate Christians and other non-Muslims. They have submitted. They're cutting their own throats, and aiding their own worst enemies," Geller said.

What's tragic here is, unlike America, where the tea party has the absolute support of the GOP, the conservative party in the UK has abandoned the basic tenets and principles of a free society.
The remarks made today by David Cameron in Dudley, site of the monster mosque, was an appeal to whom, exactly? Dudley residents were against the mosque almost uniformly. Is it a disgrace to fight for one's country, one's values, one's security?
THE Conservative Party leader branded English Defence League supporters as "disgraceful people", saying he could "ban them" if he was in power, as he stopped off in Dudley during his 24 hour campaign for change.
David Cameron arrived at the West Midlands Ambulance Service station in Burton Road in his battle bus shortly before 12.30pm.
The Tory politician was met by a media scrum of TV cameras and camera flash bulbs as journalists from across the country fought to get a shot of Mr Cameron in the last day before the polls open.
Mr Cameron is currently touring the country in the final 24 hours before election day in his bid to be given the keys to 10 Downing Street.
During his whistle-stop visit to the ambulance station, Mr Cameron met with Steve Perry, West Midlands Ambulance Service Divisional Commander for the Black Country and Vickie Wharton, Group Station Manager for Dudley, before meeting paramedics and technicians.
During the short visit, which lasted around 20 minutes, Mr Cameron said the Black Country was a key area to Conservative success in tomorrow's election, and said he wanted to visit to show his support for the two Dudley candidates Graeme Brown and Chris Kelly.
He also said he thought the party had "fought the most energetic campaign, met more people, done more events, answered more questions and set out the most consistent case for change."
Speaking about the recent visits to the town by anti-mosque protestors the English Defence League, Mr Cameron said they were "disgraceful people", who would "always be under review" if he was in power, adding "and if I needed to ban them I will".
However one Dudley resident was left with questions unanswered after shouting for the Tory leader to hear him out as he arrived at the station.
Mr Cameron said he would answer his question on his way out, but when the man approached him again as he left, the leader boarded the coach which was bound for Wales for the last few hours of the campaign.

Please check out my piece on the EDL (English Defense League) in the American Thinker. After years of floundering and false starts, England and Europe (via SIOE -- Stop the Islamization of Europe) may have finally found their movement for freedom.
In an unprecedented victory for free people everywhere, a monster mosque costing $27 million that had been planned for the English town of Dudley despite overwhelming opposition from the townspeople has been scrapped. 55,000 locals had signed a petition against the mosque, but the dhimmi government went over their heads and said it was going to be built anyway. But in the end, the Muslims and the government didn’t get their way.
That this mosque would have gone ahead at all after the petitions shows a contempt for the people that is breathtaking. But now it has been scrapped after a brilliant protest staged by the courageous English patriots of the much-maligned English Defence League.
The EDL on Sunday occupied the rooftop of the abandoned building that had been slated to be turned into the mammoth new mosque. EDL members camped out on the roof of the building. The EDL’s website said that the protestors had “food and water to last them weeks, and a PA system to give speeches.” They played the Muslim call to prayer over their PA system, to give the locals a taste of what was in store for them.
Police closed streets as EDL members streamed into Dudley to show support. Riot vans and helicopters converged on the scene, hoping to bring the EDL’s protest to a swift end. Muslims also trekked to Dudley to counter the EDL. Senior EDL leadership informed me that thousands of Muslims soon began rioting in Dudley, throwing missiles and objects at the protesters (although they were unable to reach them) – and in the process showing the true face of Islam.
EDL leaders also reported that in addition to the thousands of rioting Muslims, numerous Muslim gangs were roaming Dudley. Beatings and stabbings were reported as well. The West Midlands police, the second largest police force in the United Kingdom, could not control the wilding Muslims.
Yet in the mainstream media reports, they held back from reporting on how the Muslims were beating non-Muslims, and never identified the assailants. What makes this more egregious is that the media has no trouble demonizing the EDL, which, ironically enough, is fighting for the very freedoms those decayed liberal journalist hacks so richly enjoy. Oh, the irony.
The EDL is routinely smeared in the British media, as the Tea Party activists are smeared in the U.S. media. The corrupt, biased media defames any group, person, or organization standing against Islamic supremacism. They tar, feather and destroy the good name of good people who stand for life, liberty and individual rights. Libel and slander like “racist,” “fascist,” “bigot,” etc. color every news report of every counter-jihad action. The quisling media is the propaganda arm of jihad. It’s despicable. There is nothing racist, fascist or bigoted about the EDL.

Three days after he decried the lack of civility in American politics, President Obama is quoted in a new book about his presidency referring to the Tea Party movement using a derogatory term with sexual connotations.
In Jonathan Alter’s “The Promise: President Obama, Year One,” President Obama is quoted in an November 30, 2009, interview saying that the unanimous vote of House Republicans vote against the stimulus bills “set the tenor for the whole year ... That helped to create the tea-baggers and empowered that whole wing of the Republican Party to where it now controls the agenda for the Republicans.”
Tea Party activists loath the term “tea baggers,” which has emerged in liberal media outlets and elsewhere as a method ofmocking the activists and their concerns.
On Saturday, the president delivered a commencement address at the University of Michigan where he said one way “to keep our democracy healthy is to maintain a basic level of civility in our public debate … But we can’t expect to solve our problems if all we do is tear each other down.”
The book also describes many of the president’s top advisers cautioning him against trying to tackle health care reform in the first year because it might be too much to take on at the same time as the recession.
“‘I begged the president not to do this,” White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel says.
“They’ll give you a pass on this one,” Vice President Biden told the president.

[Faisal Shahzad] defaulted on a $200,000 mortgage on his Connecticut home and the Shelton property is now in foreclosure, according to court records. The foreclosure records show Faisal Shahzad took out the mortgage in 2004, and that he co-owned the home with a woman named Huma Mian. Chase Home Finance LLC sued Shahzad, 30, in September to force the foreclosure. The case is pending in Milford Superior Court. (here)

The accused Times Square bomber appears to have links to the same town in Colorado where convicted terrorist Najibullah Zazi lived prior to coming to New York City and attempting a foiled subway attack, Fox News has learned.
Records obtained by Fox News show Huma Asif Mian, Faisal Shahzad's wife, has relatives listed at various addresses in Colorado. The addresses include apartment leases and a property deed in Aurora, Colo., and an apartment lease in Golden, Colo., that were held on-and-off from 2003 to March of this year.
A person who answered the phone at the Golden address listed in the records refused to answer questions on Tuesday and instead asked a series of questions about how Fox News obtained the address, phone number and other information related to the case.
Zazi, the would-be subway bomber, returned to the U.S. from Pakistan after receiving bomb training and lived in Aurora from January 2009 to July 31, 2009. He then traveled to New York City, according to the information contained in his indictment, where he attempted the failed subway bombing. He and several relatives had lived in an apartment off Smoky Hill Road in Aurora, about seven miles from the address of an apartment associated with Shahzad's wife.
Attorney General Eric Holder, asked if there is any link between Shahzad and Zazi, said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon: "No comment on that. I don't have any basis to believe at least at this point that there's any connection between the two."
Pakistan makes arrests connected to NYC bomb attempt
(ISLAMABAD, May 4 (Reuters) - Pakistani police arrested several people on Tuesday in connection with the failed Times Square car bomb attack in New York, security sources said.
"We have picked up a few family members" related to Faisal Shahzad, the chief suspect in the attempted attack, a security official in Karachi said. A friend of Shahzad was also arrested.
Shahzad, a 30-year-old Pakistani-American, was arrested late on Monday at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York after being removed from a plane as it was about take off for Dubai, U.S. officials said. [nN04129610]
Another intelligence official in Pakistan said Shahzad received militant training in northwest Pakistan near the garrison town of Kohat. The area around Kohat is a stronghold of Tariq Afridi, the Pakistani Taliban commander in the region.
Shahzad will appear in Manhattan federal court later on Tuesday to face charges "for allegedly driving a car bomb into Times Square on the evening of May 1", according to a statement by U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, FBI agent George Venizelos and New York City Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said this morning it would be a "mistake" to read the 30-year-old naturalized American citizen his Miranda rights, which inform a suspect of their right to avoid self-incrimination.

Pistole said that joint terrorism task force agents and officers from the New York Police Department interviewed Shahzad last night and early this morning before reading him his Miranda rights and that he was "cooperative" and provided "valuable intelligence and evidence."
"He was Mirandized later and continued to cooperate and provide valuable information," he added.
Republicans similarly criticized the Obama administration for reading Miranda rights to "underwear bomber" Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, who was charged for attempting to blow up an airplane on Christmas Day last year. Abdulmutallab, who is not an American citizen, was also read his Miranda rights after he had been interrogated.
