Conflicting Views in Arab Press Regarding Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations

The Palestinians' decision to hold indirect negotiations with Israel over a period of four months and the Arab League's approval of this decision have sparked a debate in the Arab press between those who support negotiations and those who oppose them. 'Abd Al-Rahman Al-Rashed, director of Al-Arabiya TV and former editor of the daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, encouraged Abu Mazen to take advantage of Barack Obama's term as president in order to advance the negotiations, and cautioned the Palestinian president against his enemies who, he said, were working to undermine him and the negotiation process. Representing the opposing view, Syrian columnist Mazen Al-Naqib published a scathing article condemning the Palestinian Authority and accusing all those who support peace with Israel of treason. He claimed the only solution to the Palestinian issue was resistance and steadfastness, as demonstrated by Syria and the Lebanese and Palestinian resistance movements.

Article in Urdu-Language Jihadist Website: 'Muslims were Given Palestine As an Inheritance; Jihad Becomes Obligatory on… the Muslim Ummah to Take it Back'

In an article, an Urdu-language jihadist website describes the Palestinian issue as a conflict between Israel and the Muslim Ummah, and not as between the Arabs and Israel. The article, titled "This is not An Arab-Israel Issue but a Confrontation between Muslim Ummah and the Infidels," was written by one Yousuf Ali Hashmi. Not much information is available about the writer.

However, the Malhamah website, which published the article, is a jihadist website with several articles and interviews of militant commanders such as Mullah Nazir Ahmad and Maulana Waliur Rehman of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan and translated messages of Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Palestinians: Nobody Is Authorized to Waive the Right of Return

On May 15, 2010, the Palestinians marked the 62nd anniversary of the Nakba. Many of the statements on this occasion emphasized the right of the Palestinian refugees to return to their homes and regain their property within the borders of Israel. Another notable feature was the use of the word "Nakba" to refer not only to the 1948 war and its consequences, but also to other events, such as the current schism within the Palestinian people.

Following are details about the Nakba Day events, and statements by Palestinian officials, public figures and columnists:

An Interview with a Commander of Jaysh Al-Islam in Gaza

On May 20, 2010, the independent Palestinian news agency Ma'an published an interview with Abu 'Omar Al-Ansari, a commander of Jaysh Al-Islam, the self-proclaimed Salafi-jihadi organization in Gaza. The interview came at a time of growing suspicions among Salafi-jihadis in Gaza that Jaysh Al-Islam had reached an agreement with Hamas that would stop Hamas' aggression against it, and after a long period of increasing doubt over whether Jaysh Al-Islam was fully committed to the Salafi-jihadi creed. The fact that Jaysh Al-Islam, unlike other Salafi-jihadi groups in Gaza, has not claimed responsibility for any attack against Israel in the past year has only increased Salafi-jihadis' suspicions vis-à-vis the organization's true doctrinal commitment. Put in this light, the interview is partially an attempt to dispel these suspicions by portraying Jaysh Al-Islam as an organization which strictly adheres to the Salafi-jihadi creed and as a group which does not hesitate to challenge Hamas' authority.
