RWE Links Green Energy to Nuclear Power
The giant German utility says it will have to reduce investments in renewable energy if its nuclear power plants are shut down. Click here for the story.
RWE, which burns 40 million tons of coal per year to generate electricity, is committed to cutting 20% of its carbon emissions by the year 2020--meaning, the company needs to replace eight million tons per year of coal with renewable fuel. The firm intends to co-fire conventional and torrefied wood pellets in its coal-fired power plants to meet the so-called 20/20/20 goal.
Torrefaction is a roasting-like technology that removes virtually all the moisture from raw wood, making it hydrophobic and allowing for it to be transported, stored, ground and pulverized, and injected into furnaces just like coal.China, New Zealand Ink Film Co-Production Pact
