The Government will scrap the law allowing organisations to force workers to retire at 65 but companies will find it easier than ever to run their own compulsory retirement schemes in the wake of a Court of Appeal ruling yesterday, an expert has said. The Scottish Government has asked the public and business to consider how far freedom of information (FOI) laws should be extended. A small software company did not infringe copyright in analytical software giant SAS's software by writing a program that emulated its functions, the High Court has provisionally ruled. OPINION: There is a common misconception that appeals can only be based on a claim that a judge misinterpreted the law. Facts, many think, are out of bounds. But a Court of Appeal ruling has demonstrated that this is not true. Parts of a confidentiality agreement between a maker of photocopiers and a sales agency cannot be enforced because they violate EU competition law, the High Court has said. Companies engaged in direct marketing to consumers must not use the internet to gather data about children under 12 and must be able to back up any green claims they make, according to a new code of practice for the industry.
