1. How WikiLeaks Is Changing The Face Of Journalism

Last night, I attended the Frontline Club talk entitled The data revolution: How WikiLeaks is changing journalism. It gives me great pleasure to publish the video of this talk on One Click. On the panel Chaired by Paddy O'Connell, the presenter of BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House, were Julian Assange, WikiLeaks editor-in-chief (via online link up); journalist, academic and freedom of expression activist Heather Brooke, whose successful campaigning led to the full release of MPs' expenses files; media lawyer Mark Stephens of Finers, Stephens Innocent and Simon Rogers, editor of The Guardian's Datablog. Julian Assange confirmed that WikiLeaks is going to keep on releasing documents about the Afghan War. Some of my favourite quotes from this talk are published such as:
"There's a new type of refugee in the world and they are publishers."

Doctors Kept In The Dark About Flu Vaccine Fiasco

GPs were kept in the dark about an emerging wave of reactions to the child influenza vaccine in WA and were let down by a confusing and lethargic adverse effects reporting system, an official review has found. The report found that when evidence began to emerge of reactions to the seasonal flu vaccine in children, the state failed to notify GPs, hospitals EDs or immunisation clinics. The vaccine events reporting system needs to become more responsive to immunisation providers, the report says, and should use real time electronic measures such as email rather than accumulating paper reports.

WHO Swine Flu 'Experts' Linked To Vaccine Producers

A third of the experts advising the World Health Organisation about the swine flu pandemic had ties to drugs firms, it has emerged. Five of the 15 specialists who sat on the emergency committee had received funding from pharmaceutical giants, or were linked to them through their research. The revelation will prompt speculation that the 'pandemic' was wildly overestimated and largely fuelled by the drugs industry who stood to benefit from the panic. Last month it emerged that the Government had squandered more than £1.2 billion tackling swine flu - most of it going towards vaccines following experts' dire predictions that as many as 65,000 Britons would die. Labour MP Paul Flynn (Newport West) said: 'A year ago, these experts told us the world was facing a grave health emergency. On this occasion, regrettably, they got it wrong: their advice led WHO, the EU and national governments to vastly overrate the seriousness of the H1N1 epidemic, wasting large sums of public money and scaring the world unnecessarily'.

After Avandia: Does The FDA Have A Drug Problem?

Five days before a 2007 article in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that the diabetes drug Avandia was linked to a 43% increase in heart attacks compared with other medications or placebos, a group of scientists and executives from the drug's maker, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), gathered in a conference room at the offices of the Food and Drug Administration in White Oak, Md. The GSK goal: to convince regulators that the evidence that the company's $3 billion-a-year blockbuster drug caused heart problems was inconclusive. What GSK didn't tell the FDA was that on May 14, 2007, two days before the White Oak meeting, GSK's Global Safety Board had noted that a new assessment of Avandia studies "strengthens the [cardiac-risk] signal observed in the analysis." Or that the day before the meeting, the company had produced a preliminary draft report that showed patients on Avandia had a 46% greater likelihood of heart attack than thos e in a control group. Over the past two decades, as drug after drug has been recalled after winning FDA approval, it has been hard not to wonder if FDA regulators have been captured by the drug industry. Over the past three years, the inspector general at the Department of Health and Human Services found that the FDA had inspected only 1% of clinical-trial sites from 2000 to 2005 and lacked financial disclosure data for clinical investigators in half of all industry drug reviews. The results of this broken system may prove criminal as well as fatal.

Fallibility Of DNA Evidence Exposed - AGAIN!

In the DNA database debate that occurred during the election, one important point was quite often missed: namely that DNA evidence is not the infallible witness that is so often claimed. Today the details of a study by the New Scientist have been revealed which further emphasise the flaws in the argument of those - like Philip Davies - that believe in putting everyone in the country on the DNA database. As the Daily Mail explains: The magazine sent a sample of DNA from a real crime scene to 17 experienced analysts in an U.S. laboratory. The experts' differing results cast doubts over the technique's reliability. The sample, from a gang rape, had already been used to convict a man - but only one of the 17 scientists came to the same conclusion. Four said the evidence was inconclusive and 12 said he could be excluded. Christine Funk, a defence lawyer in the U.S., said: 'The difference between prison and freedom rests in the hands of the scientist assigned the case.' That final line should put a shiver through anyone who believes in trial by jury.
