Qur'an 2:256 says there is no compulsion in religion. But also in the Qur'an, and throughout Islamic law, there is coercion (9:29), and entrapment, and attempts to force unbelievers into impossible choices between conversion and unlivable situations (see also: Pakistani non-Muslims seeking flood aid), hunger, terror, war, and death. Or under the Ottoman devshirme system, even the loss of a child in the name of a dhimmi tribute, or tax. In other words, they'll try to make you an offer you can't refuse. But no, no, there's nocompulsion.

And as much as apologists would still try to tell us this won't, can't, shouldn't happen under Sharia, there is no meaningful mechanism of accountability or limitations of power: such things threaten to be sacrilege to those who claim to rule by divine fiat, and to a system where submission is so valued. And where submission is valued, those looking to protect Islam's supremacy will do what they feel they have to in order to achieve and maintain it.

ISLAMABAD: A 13-year-old Dalit girl was kidnapped and apparently forced to convert to Islam in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, according to a media report on Saturday.

Poonam was kidnapped from her house in Lyari Town in Karachi on Wednesday, her uncle Bhanwroo told the Daily Times newspaper.

When neighbours informed her family of Poonam's presence at a madrassa in Lyari, they went there.

"She was very scared and under the influence of maulvis. She told us they will not let her go, so she will stay with them as a Muslim," said Bhanwroo.

No compulsion.

The family contacted police in Chakiwara to lodge an FIR [First Information Report] on the kidnapping but they refused to do so, he said.

Lyari's Superintendent of Police Khadim Hussain Rind told the newspaper that lodging an FIRwould not make any difference as it will be cancelled during court proceedings.
