This week’s Comprehensive Spending Review seems certain to exert further downward pressure on house prices as tens of thousands of homebuyers lose their jobs in the years ahead and receive less help with mortgage interest from State benefits.

Against all that, pessimists have been predicting a property crash for many years and have been proved wrong to date. While interest rates remain near historic lows, there is little pressure on owners who can hold onto their jobs to sell – and relatively modest monthly costs for buyers who can obtain a mortgage. Leading family lawyers claim more couples entering marriage or civil partnership will seek to protect their financial position with pre-nuptial agreements, following German heiress Katrin Radmacher’s Supreme Court victory in London this week. The judges upheld a contract signed with her French husband, Nicolas Granatino, that reduced his divorce settlement from more than £5m to £1m.

Previously, English courts had tended to disregard such agreements and some critics claimed they were morally questionable but experts say the trend is now for our court rulings to become more closely aligned to Continental European practice.
