HM Revenue & Customs raid Isle of Man offices | |||
| |||
Tax officials from the UK and Isle of Man recently carried out a number of searches at the offices of the Montpelier group. The raids were significant enough to warrant the arrest of a 60-year old man at the premises. An HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) spokesman said "The investigation centres around the suspicion that tax avoidance schemes have been implemented fraudulently". This case shows just how wide HMRC's net has now spread - it's very dangerous to presume that information or assets held abroad will not be the target of HMRC operations. HMRC is in the process of gaining access to massive amounts of information from all around the world. At the same time, it continues to offer major financial incentives, such as the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility, to encourage voluntary disclosure.
