GlaxoSmithKline Set For U.S. Department Of Justice Investigation

Hit: Glaxo's pretax profits slumped by 10 per cent
to £1.97billion between July and September

GlaxoSmithKline is facing a slew of lawsuits in America and the possibility of a full-blown Department of Justice investigation into its controversial drug Avandia, the pharmaceuticals giant warned. The blockbuster diabetes treatment was pulled from the European market and sales were severely restricted in the US after regulators found the drug has increased the chances of a heart attack in patients. Glaxo yesterday revealed that it has received subpoenas from the DoJ over how it developed and marketed the drug in a move that has escalated fears that the US authorities will come down hard on the British giant. Separately, a number of US states are considering launching Avandia lawsuits, while new civil actions 'continue to be filed'. The prospect of a flood of multimillion dollar legal suits triggered a heavy slide in the Glaxo share price, which closed down 15p to 1277p. After effectively abandoning the drug, Glaxo has taken a further £147million hit as it slashed the value of its remaining Avandia stocks.

Media Fail: Whooping Cough Vaccine Propaganda

If reference be made to events at the time of the earlier trials of pertussis vaccine when given alone (ie not as part of triple vaccine) in the USA and UK, it becomes clear that the inclusion of pertussis vaccine makes triple vaccine much more likely to be followed by adverse reactions involving the heart and nervous system. Such reactions include shock, collapse, convulsions and screaming fits, all of which had been recorded in some of the children who received pertussis vaccine alone in the earlier trials. In a survey conducted by Dr. Michel Odent, it was found that children receiving the Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine, were six times more likely to develop asthma than children not receiving this vaccine. Finally, there is understandable concern among public health officials and parents alike as to what would happen without the vaccines. In the case of at least one (the Pertussis vaccine), the vaccine, which is known or suspected of causing infanti le encephalitis and sudden infant death syndrome, would appear to be worse than the disease. It has also been implicated in bacterial infections including meningitis. Vaccination does not constitute immunity. One Click Note: This most informative article is a MUST READ.

The Geek Shall Inherit: How Lawyer Blogging Has Gained Real Influence

Having reached the profession late, law blogging has emerged in recent years to secure real influence. Alex Aldridge assesses how the format has introduced a new range of voices to the legal community. The prominent legal commentator Joshua Rozenberg, who himself writes a weekly blog for The Guardian website and is increasingly writing pieces for online audiences rather than conventional media outlets, sees the emergence of these blogs as a response to the decline in more specialist legal coverage by national newspapers like The Telegraph, which no longer has a designated legal correspondent, and The Times, whose legal coverage is no longer freely available since its introduction this year of an online pay wall. He comments: "The newspapers don't provide the service they did [in the past], so the law firms and chambers have moved in, with the likes of the UK Supreme Court Blog and the UK Human Rights Blog particularly impressive examples.&q uot;

UK Coalition Government Saves The Axe To Build £600m Deadly Biolab Terror Target Next To Europe's Largest Train Terminal

Plans to build a massive science lab in Somers Town moved another step closer after £220million of Government funding escaped Chancellor George Osborne’s axe. The Chancellor of the Exchequer spared the Government’s investment into the UK Centre for Medical Research and Innovation (UKCRMI) from £81billion of spending cuts. The news has been met with anger by opponents who say the scheme, planned for Brill Place, behind the British Library, would be disaster for the residents. The Government funding totals more than twice the amount that Camden Council needs to save in cuts to public services over the next three years. Brian Coleman, London Assembly member for Camden and Barnet, said: “I am extremely disappointed with the Government’s decision to press ahead with construction of the UKCRMI. It is the wrong project in the wrong place. I shall seek to do what I can to make sure these plans do not come to fruition.” ; Campaigners say the 3.6acre site should be used for housing and fear the UKCRMI – which would house contagious pathogens including bird flu and carry out animal testing – could be a prime target for terrorists. Miranda Martin, of pressure group St Pancras and Somers Town Planning Action, said: “Anyone who has lived here through the King’s Cross Fire and 7/7 know that terrorism and accidents do occur.”
