There is mounting concern among US and overseas intelligence experts that Al Qaeda and associated Islamist terrorists are bent on staging suicidal, swarming-style assaults on European cities similar to the 2008 Mumbai massacre, which killed at least 173 people.

US cities are clearly also vulnerable to this kind of terrorism, as well as to attacks by Islamist-influenced and -directed individuals, such as the November 2009 mass shooting at Fort Hood--America's most populous army base--by a Muslim U.S. Army major. The gunman, Nidal Malik Hasan, killed 13 unarmed soldiers and wounded 30 others before he was stopped by civilian police.
