NOTE: The rise of gold as an alternative currency has helped to fuel a merger wave among gold mining firms. Companies that literally make money by producing the precious metal are combining and acquiring each other. Size matters. Juniors want to be intermediates. Intermediates want to be larger intermediates and seniors, etc. The key elements to watch for are (a) producing and proven resources, as opposed to hype and speculation; (b) actual production costs now and for the foreseeable future; (c) longevity of the mines and required capital to maintain economic, efficient production; and (d) cash. Does the whale need the minnow's cash? Can the acquiring company provide the capital that will be needed to realize the full potential of the assets? As in all fields, the gold industry is complex and specialized; and the challenge for journalists who cover gold is to clarify the complexities in order to help investors make intelligent, informed decisions.
