Just a reminder that this Sunday is the Global Day of Jewish Learning, of which JTA is a proud media sponsor.
We're hosting our own event in New York at the Columbia/Barnard Hillel on the topic "Is Journalism Kosher?" More details are available here.
Also, we wanted to share the letter below from Rabbi Steinsaltz.
Happy Learning!
This coming Sunday, November 7th, Jews all around the world will be celebrating the Talmud along with me at Global Day of Jewish Learning events across the world.
On this day, over 350 communities world-wide are coming together – in synagogues, Federations and community centers -- to explore the magnificent texts we have inherited from our forebears and will be passing down to our children.
I hope you will also join me by signing up to participate in the Global Day of Jewish Learning.
You can also find an event in your community by using our custom Event Finder.
I will be privileged to recite a special hadran kaddish at a completion ceremony on Sunday (siyyum) in Jerusalem. The word “hadran” means “encore.” Jewish knowledge belongs to everyone, and I hope that my work on the Talmud has helped to open a new era: taking the books out of the hands of the few and giving them an encore - making them available and accessible to everyone.
Even before the Global Day, you may also want to engage in some of the Big Questions
that are part of our communal study, such as: Does God hear prayer? What is my responsibility to Tzedakah? What is sex for? When we say “do unto others”…who are the others?
I have been commenting on these questions and invite you to join the Big Questions discussion.
My watchword through all of my work is “One Step Ahead.” I hope you will become my partner in this endeavor. Let's take one step ahead together through the Global Day of Jewish Learning.
Thank you,
Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz
