'Greece's prime minister dropped his threat to call an early election Sunday, saying Greeks had shown in crucial local elections they wanted his government to continue with the austerity measures aimed at pulling the debt-ridden country out of a severe financial crisis.
But George Papandreou's governing Socialists lost significant ground to the opposition conservatives compared to their landslide win in general elections just over a year ago, while many voters showed their displeasure with the bracing austerity package by staying away. In a country where voting is compulsory, turnout for the Sunday poll was projected at around 60 percent.
Papandreou had threatened to call snap general elections if his governing socialist PASOK party fared badly in Sunday's vote for 13 regional governors and 325 mayors, billed as a referendum on the government's austerity measures.'

'The unemployed will be ordered to do periods of compulsory full-time work in the community or be stripped of their benefits under controversial American-style plans to slash the number of people without jobs.
The proposals, in a white paper on welfare reform to be unveiled this week, are part of a radical government agenda aimed at cutting the £190bn-a-year welfare bill and breaking what the coalition now calls the "habit of worklessness".
The measures will be announced to parliament by the work and pensions secretary, Iain Duncan Smith, as part of what he will describe as a new "contract" with the 1.4 million people on jobseekers' allowance. The government's side of the bargain will be the promise of a new "universal credit", to replace all existing benefits, that will ensure it always pays to work rather than stay on welfare.'

'The boy’s mother is a Ugandan Catholic who has lived in Britain for more than 20 years, has degrees in IT and finance from two London universities, and has held down good jobs. Six years ago, however, she was temporarily homeless with a young daughter. She appealed for help to the social workers of the borough where she then lived. She was told she could put her little girl in foster care, but could be given no help herself. When she refused to hand over her child, a care order was made on the grounds of the mother’s “neglect”.
The mother was arrested at work, in front of her shocked colleagues, by six policemen, one armed with a pistol, and held in custody so her daughter could be seized. With court approval, the social workers then gave the girl to her father, despite the fact that he had a criminal record and was HIV positive.'

He said he'd favor increasing the Social Security retirement age to 70 for people who have at least 20 years until retirement, tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than wage inflation and limiting payments to those who need them.
