Ofcom rules Islam Channel in breach of the Broadcasting Code


Following the publication in March 2010 of 'Re-programming British Muslims', a report by the Quilliam Foundation about the Islam Channel, Ofcom ruled on Monday 8 November that five programmes were in breach of the UK Broadcasting Code, including two specifically on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Ofcom's Broadcast Bulletin covered the editions of Ummah Talk and Politics Beyond from 14 October 2009 and 16 October 2009, respectively, and found them to be in breach of Rule 5.5 of the Broadcasting Code:

'Due impartiality on matters of political or industrial controversy and matters relating to current public policy must be preserved on the part of any person providing a service (listed above). This may be achieved within a programme or over a series of programmes taken as a whole'...Read more>>

Harriet Sherwood focuses on settlements and chickens' rights in Israel.

Today's Guardian features two reports from Jerusalem correspondent Harriet Sherwood. The first is a run of the mill piece covering the Israeli announcement that it intends to allow the building of 800 new homes in the West Bank settlement of Ariel.

The second, however, highlights the plight of chickens raised in battery farms in central Israel, and a campaign by the Israeli group Anonymous for Animal Rights ahead of an upcoming Knesset vote on the banning of battery cages...Read more>>



Guardian absolves Hamas for UNRWA gun request

Harriet Sherwood absolves Hamas of responsibility after UNRWA is given guns by Israel for their own protection.

Harriet Sherwood reported on Israel giving weapons to UNRWA officials for their personal safety. Sherwood opened her article without naming who was behind these security concerns:

'Israeli authorities have approved the delivery of four submachine guns to the main UN agency in Gaza for the protection of its head, John Ging, following assassination attempts and death threats.'
