1. WikiLeaks Redefining Global History - Speculation On Dynamite 'Diplomatic' Cables

Wikileaks’ Twitter account made two enigmatic announcements about its plans for future disclosures, and thereby, in usual style, confused the professional journalism sector. The comments hint at a future release of information that far eclipses the public interest value of 2010's high profile WikiLeaks releases. So what is behind these enigmatic comments? Speculation, as a rule, should be discouraged. But since the press is going to do it anyway, it might pay to leave breadcrumbs. An informed guess as to the content of WL’s next big release would refer to the WIRED chat logs (released here by BoingBoing) which allegedly contain the record of Bradley Manning confessing to the hacker, Adrian Lamo, about his disclosures to Wikileaks. “Manning” seemed to believe that it was the diplomatic cables that contained the information that was so crucial to the public interest. Their content, it would seem, is the crux of his case for breaking American law, and risking the 52 year prison sentence he now may well face. The extract published here would appear to suggest that, in fact, the 260,000 cables might be significant enough in terms of reform potential to be what Dan Ellsberg hopefully called “today’s Pentagon Papers” at the Iraq War Logs press conference. (12:52:33 PM) bradass87: "Hilary Clinton, and several thousand diplomats around the world are going to have a heart attack when they wake up one morning, and finds an entire repository of classified foreign policy is available, in searchable format to the public.. theres so much… it affects everybody on earth… everywhere there’s a US post… there’s a diplomatic scandal that will be revealed… Iceland, the Vatican, Spain, Brazil, Madascar, if its a country, and its recognized by the US as a country, its got dirt on it." It appears, at least, that we are in for an interesting few months.

Novartis Must Pay $12 Million Over Jaw-Bone Damage

A North Carolina jury decided that Novartis failed to adequately warn about the risks of its Zometa and Aredia bone-strengthening meds and awarded $12.8 million to Rita Fussman, whose family claimed she suffered jawbone damage while dying of breast cancer last year, Bloomberg News reports. Novartis, which a spokeswoman says is reviewing its options, faces about 700 suits over claims the drugs cause jaw-bone damage, which is known as osteonecrosis.

Polio Vaccine Compensation Could Serve As Precedent For Swine Flu Vaccine Narcolepsy Law Suits

Johanna Junttila, struck down by polio vaccine, age one
At the age of one, Johanna Junttila was one of thousands of children in Finland who were given a drop of juice in 1985. The liquid was an orally-administered vaccine against an outbreak of polio that threatened Finland at the time. After the vaccine something unexpected happened. Junttila came down with Guillain-BarrĂ© syndrome, causing paralysis in the lower part of her body. After a number of diagnoses and treatments, parents Maritta and Terho Halonen started looking for ways to be compensated. A legal battle lasting several years ensued, concluding with a decision in 1995, in which the Supreme Court ordered the state to pay damages. The polio case could prove useful if court cases emerge from a recent rise in cases of narcolepsy, which coincided with last winter’s vaccination campaign against the H1N1, or swine flu virus. As many as 40 children in Finland have been diagnosed in Finland after the vaccinations. Normally, about three children or young people a year are diagnosed with the disease. The possible link between narcolepsy and the swine flu vaccine is being examined in extensive studies.

UK Medical Test To Be Fairer? Don't Believe A Word Of It!

You may have heard on the UK news today that the work capability assessment (WCA) – the medical test for employment and support allowance – is to be made fairer and more just. It isn’t. It’s actually going to be made very much more harsh and unjust. Because although the coalition have said they accept all of the recommendations made by Professor Harrington in his report on the WCA, they have also said they are still going ahead with changes to the WCA which they set out earlier this year. We’ve written before about the plans to remove almost half the mental health descriptors, dock points from amputees who can lift with their stumps and assess claimants with walking problems using imaginary wheelchairs. Nothing has changed in those plans according to the government response to Harrington. So don’t give the claims of a new, fairer world for claimants too much credibility until you’ve read the small print. Cit izens Advice is a member of the Disability Benefits Consortium fronted by Disability Alliance. The best that the consortium seems to be able to manage by way of campaigning, however, seems to be a really stiff letter to Iain Duncan Smith. Though, just as we were writing this, we got news of a more promising campaign by Mind to postpone the migration of incapacity benefit claimants to ESA until all of Harrington’s recommendations have been implemented.
