Dublin Protesters March Against Cuts as Bail-out Looms

'Tens of thousands of people have marched through Dublin in protest at the government's austerity programme. Protest leaders said it was the first of many demonstrations over plans to raise taxes and cut public spending.

The austerity programme is designed to cut the Irish Republic's massive government deficit, exacerbated by the rescue of the country's banks. The march came as officials met to hammer out the final details of a financial bail-out for the country.'

Iceland Is No Ireland as State Free of Bank Debt, Grimsson Says

'Iceland’s President Olafur R. Grimsson said his country is better off than Ireland thanks to the government’s decision to allow the banks to fail two years ago and because the krona could be devalued.

“The difference is that in Iceland we allowed the banks to fail,” Grimsson said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Mark Barton today. “These were private banks and we didn’t pump money into them in order to keep them going; the state did not shoulder the responsibility of the failed private banks".'

Maliki Wants Foreign Troops Out of Iraq

'Iraq's recently-reinstated prime minister has warned against any extension to the foreign presence on the strife-weary country's soil.

Nouri al-Maliki, who was mandated earlier in the month to remain premier for another four years, said on Saturday, "I do not feel the need for the presence of any other international forces to help Iraqis control the security situation," the Associated Press reported. "The security agreement with what it included of dates and commitments will remain valid," he said.

US Vice President Joe Biden, however, said last Saturday that the American forces had to stay in Iraq beyond the deadline mentioned in the deal, claiming that the Iraqi security forces were not yet ready to fully operate on their own.'

EU Bans BPA-Containing Baby Bottles

'The European Commission has banned the use of baby bottles containing the chemical Bisphenol-A (BPA) from the early next year, fearing it may pose harm to children.

The compound may affect the development of the immune system and its response in young children, the commission said. Parents "can be sure that as of mid-2011 plastic infant feeding bottles will not include BPA," said John Dalli, commissioner in charge of health and consumer policy.'
