Sunday Telegraph letter 5 Dec 2010
He clutched my arm and said :
“You do know we won in the end”. He was not joking.
Unfortunately, he mangled it, but the essence was still there when the Editor's version of this letter appeared in today's Sunday Telegraph.
Sir
Your columnist Jenny McCartney (Sunday Telegraph 29 November) rightly draws attention to the intrusive and increasing impact of EU decisions on Britain. But she could have gone a lot further.
The EU’s aim is clear. Ultimately, the right of the British to their true sovereign independence as a nation will be lost.
When Heath took us in, empty promises were made about no loss of sovereignty. Without mincing words, we were lied to. Since then, our identity as a nation and our culture as a society have been seriously damaged.
Stripped bare of the rhetoric at the time, the deal on offer was this - peace and plenty for us in exchange for political submission to them. Their promises fade with every day that passes. Yet they have nailed the submission of successive British governments.
An encounter with a German MEP in the European Parliament a couple of
years ago said it all. He clutched my arm and said :
“You do know we won in the end”. He was not joking.
