Making the most of the Christmas period

The Christmas period provides a wonderful opportunity to explain why Jesus Christ is good news for individuals and for our nation.

The BBC will air a new dramatisation of the events surrounding the birth of Jesus Christ in the week leading up to Christmas. Four half-hour episodes of The Nativity will be broadcast on BBC 1 in prime time slots (7pm each evening from Monday 20th until Thursday 23rd December) and should attract audiences of several million.

The production seeks to follow the biblical narrative and to highlight Jesus’ identity as God’s Son coming to earth in fulfillment of God’s promise. The programmes and the surrounding media coverage should provide great opportunities to talk to people about the reality and relevance of Jesus Christ. Please spread the word and think about what resources might be available to help you and your church make the most of it. Further details about ‘The Nativity’ can be found here.

There’s still time to order copies of Lord Carey’s leaflet in which he prompts readers to use the Christmas period to reflect on the relevance of Jesus Christ to the future of our nation. Could you or your church deliver copies to homes in your local area or include in your Christmas cards? Find out more here.

Why not send a Christmas card to your MP (and other local leaders) thanking them for their service and assuring them of your prayers for them? You could also include a copy of Lord Carey’s leaflet, mention the Not Ashamed campaign and the positive impact of the birth of Jesus.

Halal Petition – Operation Nehemiah

Online Halal petitionIn the UK there has been an increasing use of halal meat in retail outlets and restaurants. It is often served without consumers being warned or sold without clear labelling.

At Christian Concern we believe that halal meat should not be imposed on the British public. Non-Muslims should have the freedom to avoid meat that has been ritually slaughtered. We believe that halal meat should always be clearly labelled and that non-halal alternatives should always be available.

On this basis we are encouraging people to support the Operation Nehemiah Halal Campaign (run by the Barnabas Fund). Operation Nehemiah has launched a petition online as part of its Halal campaign. Please sign the petition here.

Further information on halal can be found here.
