Action Alert

Lord Falconer misrepresents the law on Assisted Suicide

This month Lord Falconer has launched a new Commission on Assisted Dying. The vast majority of the members of Lord Falconer’s new commission are well-known names in the pro-legalisation lobby and we have grave concerns over the independence and transparency of this new group. A detailed analysis of how biased the new Commission is can be foundhere.

Lord Falconer's launch article in the Times has already misrepresented the law. Further details can be read
here. Please also see two letters published on the Times websitehere.

The Care Not Killing Alliance amongst others have refused to give evidence to the Commission and their letter explaining why can be read
here. Further resources can be found on the Care Not Killing website.

BBC Newsnight Debate on Religious Intolerance with Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali

BBC Newsnight on 16 Dec featured a discussion on whether there was a clash between Muslims and Christians around the world and looked in particular at Egypt's Coptic Christians and a Swiss referendum on the banning of building minarets. The guests included the former Bishop of Rochester, Michael Nazir-Ali, a Muslim cleric and a secular feminist.

Ireland Abortion Ban Upheld

We thank God that the ban on abortion in Ireland has been upheld this week by the European Court of Human Rights. Three women had argued that the lack of access to abortion in Ireland breaches their human rights. However, the Court ruled that a nation may define for itself protections afforded to life and said there is no Convention “right” to abortion.

However, the Court also ruled that one of the women was denied an effective procedure from procuring an abortion when she had a legal right to obtain one because of the risk of the pregnancy to her life.
