More WikiLeaks Middle East revelations


As the Wikileaks cables continue to be published in the global media there have been a number of disclosures relating to a range of Middle Eastern states and parties. Saudi plan for 'Arab force' to confront Iran in Lebanon

A cable released by Wikileaks and reported in yesterday's Guardian shows Prince Saud al-Faisal of Saudi Arabia proposing an 'Arab force' which would destroy Hezbollah.

BBC News website amends article

BBC News agrees to amend misleading article that suggests Israel is building new settlements.

This morning, the BBC News website reported on Mahmoud Abbas' reaction to the announcement that the US has failed to secure an Israeli settlement freeze in the West Bank. The opening sentence of 'Middle East peace talks 'crisis' over settlement row' implied that Israel was building new settlements, rather than buildings within pre-existing settlements:

'Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas says Middle East peace talks are in crisis following Israel's refusal to stop building settlements on occupied land.'

Hamas commits to further kidnappings, sentences 'collaborator' to death

A senior Hamas politician voiced support for the renewed kidnapping of Israelis, while the Gaza-based Islamist group has also sentenced an alleged collaborator to death.

The Palestinian Ma'an news outlet reported today on two separate stories concerning Hamas. Firstly, the deputy speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council, Ahmad Bahar, attended a conference in Algeria, where he:

'...urged Palestinian resistance factions to capture more Israeli soldiers in order to force Israel to release all Palestinian political prisoners held in Israel.'

Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit was kidnapped in Gaza in 2006 and has been denied Red Cross access for the duration of his imprisonment...Read more>>
