Flashback October 2010: Winter to be Mild Predicts Met Office

'The Met Office, using data generated by a £33million supercomputer, claims Britain can stop worrying about a big freeze this year because we could be in for a milder winter than in past years.

But this is the same equipment used to produce recent official seasonal forecasts – before those bulletins were axed in March after a string of much-criticised blunders.'

Abbas: I'll Ask Israel To Take Over West Bank

'Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has warned he may dissolve his self-rule government and ask Israel to resume full control of the West Bank if troubled peace talks fail.

Dismantling the Palestinian Authority would be a last resort, Abbas told Palestine TV in an interview broadcast late Friday. However, his comments marked the most explicit warning yet that he's considering a step that could crush lingering hopes for a Mideast peace deal.

If Abbas were to take such a step, Israel, as a military occupier, would have to assume full responsibility again for 2.2 million Palestinians in the West Bank. Israel was relieved of that financial burden with the establishment of the Palestinian Authority in 1994, as part of interim peace deals.'

Easter Island Tense as Police, Rapa Nui regroup – Swat Teams!

'A military plane carrying riot police reinforcements landed on Easter Island Saturday, and Chile’s Interior Minister said they will continue evicting Rapa Nui islanders who have been squatting in government buildings built on their ancestral properties.

Dozens of people were wounded by police buckshot and batons after violently resisting the first such eviction on Friday on the usually tranquil South Pacific island, where as many as 50,000 tourists come each year to see the Moai – huge stone heads carved by the Rapa Nui’s ancestors.'

Cancun Sun Speeds Decay of Global Warming Charade

This global-warming/climate-change stuff is a great racket.

Over in England right now, they’re locked in the jaws of a very early freeze-up. The roads are iced, the plows overworked, and people are angry. But there’s a precious subset of the English population that are not enduring the frigid and premature torments of a northern winter. They’re the climate-change activists, bureaucrats, politicians, puppeteers and NGOs — the class of professional alarmists who’ve been banging on about global warming for close on two decades now. This bunch has exempted itself from the rigors of English November, traded their sackcloth and ashes for sun-wear and tropical beaches.'

'Medical professionals commonly write articles for popular medical journals that endorse specific drugs or medical devices. But a new study has found that most fail to disclose the fact that they are receiving direct compensation from Big Pharma for such endorsements, which is often to the tune of millions of dollars.

The report, which appears in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, found that roughly 50 percent of surgeons who received more than $1 million from orthopedic medical device manufacturers did not disclose this information in their published journal articles. And the aggregate total of such payments amounted to $248 million in 2007.'

Brazilian Army to Stay Longer in Rio

'The Brazilian military forces will continue to stay in Rio de Janeiro city as peacekeepers following the crackdown on drug traffickers last month.

The decision was made based on a request from the governor of Rio in order to make sure the drug gangs will not return to the slum areas again, AFP quoted Defense Minister Nelson Jobin as saying on Saturday. The military's continued presence in Rio has got approval of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The Brazilian leader approved the request for hundreds of soldiers to remain in the Compexo do Alemao for the time being.'

US Deal Humiliating: S Korea Lawmakers

'The new agreement is a "humiliating and treacherous deal that prevents South Korea's access to the US auto market, which should be a key pillar of the FTA (Free trade Agreement)," the opposition party lawmakers said in a statement on Sunday, AFP reported.

The South Korean lawmakers added that the agreement has too many concessions for Washington and too little in return for Seoul.

"We have been hit by the North with cannons and now we're being hit by the US with the economy," said Park Jie-Won, floor leader of the Democratic Party, referring to last month's artillery assault by Pyongyang on a border island.'
