Israel's Teflon Prime Minister

Prof. Paul Eidelberg

As everyone now knows from Wikileaks—but what has long been known to discerning observers—is that President Barak Obama is a liar!

His repeated assertions, that a solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict is a precondition of dealing effectively with the Iranian problem, are a tissue of lies. We have heard this kind of lie year after year for decades: that the Palestinian problem is the core of the Middle East problem.

But didn't Binyamin Netanyahu know this? Didn't he know that Mr. Obama's assertion of the primacy of the Palestinian problem as opposed to the primacy of the Iranian problem was nothing but a charade?

Didn't Netanyahu know that his difference with Obama on this issue was not, in truth, a difference in strategic judgment? Didn't he know, therefore, that the Obama administration must have ulterior motives for lying about the primacy of the Palestinian problem? What was this motive?

Simply this: Inasmuch as Mr. Obama and his multicultural administration lack the ideological incentive, as well as the courage, to eliminate the Iranian threat, they need a scapegoat to conceal their ignominious character. Israel is of course the scapegoat of choice.

But doesn’t Mr. Netanyahu know this? Or is he, like Obama, another spineless politician trapped in his own cesspool of lies—lies about "peace" which his former and departed "peace partner," Yasser Arafat, defined as the destruction of Israel? Poor Bibi, ensnared in the role of playing deaf, dumb, and blind.

Even Mr. Oslo himself, Shimon Peres, now admits that Oslo was a mistake—admits, but does not resign from office, even though that "mistake" has cost the lives of more than 1,500 Jewish men, women, and children.

So what is Bibi to do now that the lies to which he closed his eyes and ears have been exposed by Wikileaks? He said that the Wikileaks deluge does not harm Israel. But doesn't it harm his relationship with Mr. Obama? Doesn't Wikileaks make it exceedingly difficult for an honorable man to negotiate with that obviously malevolent liar?

But I forget: Netanyahu is Israel's Teflon prime minister.
