Last Modified: 11 Dec 2010 13:12 GMT

Zbigniew Brzezinski was born in Warsaw, Poland and rose to ranks in the US government to become one of the most influential geostrategists in the world.

During his childhood his family moved between Germany and Canada following his father's diplomatic posts for the Polish government.

Brzezinski's academic interests led him to McGill University and then Harvard University in the US.

Following the attainment of US citizenship and several professorial posts, he began advising political campaigns and figures, such as John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Jimmy Carter.

In 1976, then-elected president Carter appointed him national security advisor where he guided the administration on foreign policy decisions concerning all regions of the world.

As a scholar and geostrategist, his thinking has fundamentally influenced theories on international relations, totalitarianism, communism, and globalisation.
